history

The OTZ went indirectly from the Volkswacht out that in the GDR the official press organ of the SED -Bezirksleitung Gera was. The Volkswacht came with its twelve local editions on a circulation of 215,200 copies.

On January 8, 1990, Dieter Hausold was elected as the new editor-in-chief. He resigned just 10 days later and was replaced by Ullrich Erzigkeit. This enforced the separation from the SED and a name change of the newspaper. There were death and bomb threats. The letters to the editor were of outstanding importance. The new parties and political movements were given the opportunity to present themselves. Erzigkeit was editor-in-chief of the newspaper until the end of 2013.

From 1990 the people's watch appeared briefly as Ostthüringer Nachrichten (OTN). When the WAZ had published the Ostthüringer Zeitung in the same distribution area through a subsidiary with the employees poached by the Ostthüringer Nachrichten and offered subscribers to the Ostthüringer Nachrichten for subscription, the OTN had to stop its publication.

Since 2010 the OTZ has been cooperating more closely with the other newspapers Thüringer Allgemeine (TA) and Thüringische Landeszeitung (TLZ) of the Mediengruppe Thüringen (MGT), formerly newspaper group Thuringia (ZGT), which in turn belongs to the Funke media group . In the print editions, a growing number of articles are exchanged with one another.

At the end of 2013, the OTZ printing center in the Löbichau district of Beerwalde in the Altenburger Land district was closed, affecting more than 100 employees. Since then, the OTZ has been printed partly in the ZGT's printing house in Erfurt and partly in Chemnitz .
