Museo Revoltella - Galleria d'Arte Moderna
The Civico Museo Revoltella - Galleria d'Arte Moderna ( German Municipal Museum Revoltella - Gallery for Modern Art ) is the largest art history museum in the northern Italian city of Trieste and is one of the most important art galleries in Italy . It was founded in 1872 from the estate of Baron Pasquale Revoltella from Trieste and, in addition to the original furnishings, the library and the art collection of the baron, also includes works from the late 19th and 20th centuries.
history
The museum was founded in 1872 from the estate of Baron Pasquale Revoltella from Trieste and is located in his former city residence in Piazza Venezia in the Borgo Giuseppino district . Revoltella had his palace designed during his lifetime so that it could later be used as a museum, and for this reason placed particular emphasis on the decoration and interior design of the building. He commissioned the Berlin architect Friedrich Hitzig with the planning and completed the building in 1858 .
At his death in 1869, Revoltella bequeathed his city residence to the municipality of Trieste. According to his last will, the building and the art collection it contained were opened to the public. Since a clause in the donation stipulated that all contemporary art movements had to be taken into account through appropriate purchases, today's museum includes not only the original living quarters, the library and the art collection of the baron, but also works from the late 19th and 20th centuries .
Looking for new premises for the ever-growing collection of works of art, the city acquired Trieste in 1907 the Palazzo Brunner next to the former residence Revoltellas and later the adjacent Palazzo Basevi , then the premises of the museum that now extend over an entire city block.
It was not until 1963 , however, that the renovation and conversion work of the two newly acquired buildings began. The project was entrusted to the Italian architect Carlo Scarpa , but was not completed until after his death in 1992 .
The museum's current exhibition comprises around 350 works, which are spread over almost 40 halls and six floors.
