Josef "Pepi" Stiegler (born April 20, 1937 in Lienz ) is a former Austrian ski racer . He was Olympic champion in 1964 and world champion in slalom at the same time .

Career

Stiegler was a photographer by profession. His mother ran a photo studio in Lienz, his father Josef was employed by the Austrian Post as a driver of public buses. He celebrated his first successes in skiing in the winter of 1957. He became Austrian junior champion in slalom and combined, won downhill and combined in Val Gardena and the Blauherd downhill in Zermatt . In the 1957/58 season he won a total of seven races, including downhill, slalom and the combination of Megève and the combination of Zermatt. The next winter he won the Megève slalom and came third on the Ganslernhang in Kitzbühel .

After he was mostly at the front only in FIS-B races, Stiegler succeeded on 9/10. January 1960 in Wengen also his first victory in the important races. With second place in downhill and slalom, he won the combination on the Lauberhorn . Shortly afterwards he was second in the Kitzbühel slalom and third in the combination.
At the 1960 Winter Olympics in Squaw Valley , Stiegler won the silver medal in giant slalom behind Swiss Roger Staub on February 21 , although he was proclaimed the winner at short notice. In the slalom he was fifth, but with the 15th place in the downhill he just missed a combination medal in fourth.

In the winter of 1960/61, Stiegler won several important slalom races: He won in Wengen (January 15, where he also took second place in the combined) as well as in Megève (January 29), at the "World Championship dress rehearsal" in Chamonix ( February 26), in the slalom of Kranjska Gora on March 4, 1961 and at the Arlberg-Kandahar races in Mürren (March 12; here he also came second in combination).
In a world rankings published on March 16, he took second place in the overall standings behind Guy Périllat , he led the slalom list before Périllat.
In the next winter he could only win the Bad Wiessee slalom , in Kitzbühel he was third (January 21). The 1962 World Cup in Chamonix was also disappointing. In the slalom he only finished 20th, so he was not allowed to start in the giant slalom. In the slalom and in the combination of Megève he came second (February 4th).

In the 1962/63 season, Stiegler won none of the important races, but finished second in the slalom and the combination in Megève (January 27).
On January 6, 1964, he first took second place in the Hindelang slalom and the Wengen giant slalom on January 11, and then won the Spittal giant slalom .
He then celebrated the greatest success of his career at the 1964 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck . In the giant slalom he came third behind the French François Bonlieu and Karl Schranz , in the slalom he was Olympic champion and world champion in front of the two Americans Billy Kidd and Jimmy Heuga . There had been internal differences within the ÖSV about his line-up , which is why supervisor Rupert Zimmerebner and head coach Ernst Oberaigner announced their resignation shortly after the games.

The Austrian sports journalists voted him Austria's athlete of the year for his Olympic victory .

After the games, Stiegler ended his career. For a short time he worked as a men's trainer in the ÖSV , where his obligation was planned until 1966 and he was supposed to prepare the team for the World Championships in Chile (his appointment was made at the so-called international conference from June 19 to 21, 1964 in Badgastein ). But the East Tyrolean officially resigned from his position in Innsbruck on September 10, 1965; His plans were to go to the USA at the beginning of November , where he would hold the post of ski school director in Jackson Hole and he subsequently implemented this project and immigrated to the USA forever. He was involved in setting up a ski school in the ski resort of Jackson , Wyoming , which he ran until 1994. In 2001 he was inducted into the US National Ski Hall of Fame. His daughter Resi Stiegler also became a ski racer, as did his son Josef jun. ("Seppi").
