action

After a night of partying, defaulting debtor Michael McCrea is rudely woken up by two debt collectors from loan shark Darren Perrier in his apartment in Dublin . Orlando and Ivan give him an ultimatum to repay the borrowed money, otherwise two bones of his choice will be broken. Michael wants to borrow money from the seedy businessman The Mull to pay off his debt to Perrier. He looks in vain for The Mull in a pool bar . Then Michael changes the bar and meets Shamie, the friend of his neighbor Brenda, accompanied by another girl. He threatens Shamie to leave Brenda if he is after other girls. Thereupon there is a fight between the two, which Michael wins for himself, whereupon he is approached by The Mull, who offers him the participation in a robbery. Together with one of his crooks and Michael, he pulls through the break-in in a family home. The Mull promises each of the three 10,000 euros for the coup.

On his way home, Michael is caught by Orlando and Ivan, but can escape them. When Michael arrives at home, he finds that his pistol is no longer in his apartment. He knocks on his neighbor Brenda, who is the only one to whom he gave a spare key to the apartment, to find out if she has taken the gun. She opens the door for him, heavily drunk, with tearful eyes and tells him that Shamie has separated from her and that she will therefore commit suicide. At that moment, Orlando and Ivan show up at Michael's apartment building to break his legs. His neighbor Brenda rushes to his aid and shoots Orlando. Ivan then fled to report to his client Perrier, who offered a bounty of 10,000 euros for the capture of Michael and Brenda.

Michael's father Jim appears at the crime scene, where he finds Orlando, who was shot. He helps Michael and Brenda to get the dead out of town and bury them in the woods outside town. Because Brenda's car does not start again on the way back to town and is therefore useless for the three of them, they set the car on fire to destroy any traces of treachery. They continue on their way on foot. While he was walking, Jim reports that the Grim Reaper appeared to him in a dream to inform him that he would be fetched from him if he fell asleep again. So Jim tries to keep himself awake with coffee, cocaine and slaps.

Back in town, Michael meets with The Mull to get paid off for helping out with the break-in. But instead of receiving the promised 10,000 euros, Michael is knocked down. His father Jim and Brenda watch the scene, rush to Michael to help and flee with him. After Michael came to in the car, his father explains to him what happened. He proudly hands his son 30,000 euros, which he has taken from The Mull. In the same breath he asks Michael to buy him cocaine so that he can stay awake. The three of them then drive back to the pool bar, where they buy the drugs. While Jim sniffs the cocaine in the toilet, Darren Perrier appears with his followers in the bar. After an exchange of fire with the gangsters, Michael and Brenda manage to escape. Behind the bar they meet Shamie, whom they force to take them with him in his car. Perrier is late to catch Michael and Brenda. Only the owners of two attack dogs meet him . In his anger, Perrier shoots the two dogs. The Mull also arrives at the bar and recognizes Jim as the man who knocked him down. As a result, Jim is caught by Perrier's people. They take Jim to a warehouse where they mistreat him. Perrier calls Michael where his father is and that he has to pay his debts immediately.

Michael drives to the warehouse, where he manages to take out most of Perrier's men. He brings his father out of the building and drives the escape car towards the exit of the courtyard when Jim is fatally hit by Perrier with a volley from his automatic rifle. Jim breathes with his last strength that Perrier is the Grim Reaper he has dreamed of. Then Michael jumps out of the car and fires at Perrier and his followers until he too is struck down by Perrier. When Perrier approaches Michael, who is lying on the ground, to kill him, a street gang appears with their attack dogs to avenge the two attack dogs killed by Perrier. Perrier is killed by the dogs. The dog owners take Michael to a veterinarian to treat his injuries.

Together with Brenda and the dog owners, Michael buries his father and the two killed attack dogs, Achilles and Apollo. Michael and Brenda confess their love during the funeral ceremony. They then go to see Michael's mother, whom Michael has not visited for many years.

reception

Lars-Christian Daniels from Filmstarts compared the film with Snatch - pigs and diamonds , jack, queen, king, grass , see Bruges ... and die? as well as Bang Boom Bang - a surefire thing . “A colorful ensemble of bizarre characters” combined with “a whole range of amusing ideas” make up the “entertaining gangster flick”, which only shows minor weaknesses towards the end. “Thanks to the consistently high gag hit rate and technically clean staged action”, “not only fans of the typical Guy Ritchie cocktail get their money's worth”. The humor is almost as "deep black" as in the Danish productions. In China they eat dogs and Adam's apples . Lars-Christian Daniels awarded the film 3.5 stars out of five.

The online editors of the first judged that Mark O'Rowe wrote a screenplay that brought "wonderfully bizarre running gags and sentimentally exaggerated villains that the viewer almost feels sorry for" on the screen.

Gregor Jossé from the Teleschau media service is of the opinion that the film is a “high-speed criminal hunt”, in which “the crisp dialogues” and “the groovy soundtrack” are convincing.

The film received at Rotten Tomatoes a score of 57 percent based on 37 ratings. Donald Clarke of The Irish Times awarded the film two stars out of five. Paul Byrne from Movies.ie also awarded two stars out of five, justifying this by saying that the film would be less funny than Intermission . Gary Goldstein of the Los Angeles Times praised the film as a fast-paced, albeit violent, production with quirky characters, engaged portrayal and surprising twists and turns. Stuart Messham from Maxim recommended the film, which was half a "comic tour de force" and half an "urban western". He gave the film the highest rating of five stars.
