Palatine dialect competitions

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Among the literary competitions in Rhineland-Palatinate , there were four Palatine dialect competitions up until 2011 , which were held regularly. It all started in 1953 with the Palatine dialect poet contest in Bockenheim an der Weinstrasse . Later came the Gonbach dialect poetry competition ( Gonbach , 1984), the Dannstadter Höhe dialect competition ( Dannstadt-Schauernheim , 1988) and the Sickinger dialect poet competition ( Wallhalben Association , 1991). The Gonbach competition took place for the last time in 2011, so that only three competitions remained.

All four competitions deal with the Palatinate dialects and are offered to Palatinate dialect poets . The respective jurors are independent experts, for example dialectologists , Germanists or educators with relevant subjects. The results you found in the awarding of applicant texts are considered to be trend-setting when it comes to the history, current use and future of regional dialect and the development of dialect poetry.

characterization

None of the Palatinate dialect competitions have thematic specifications. You are open to those dialect poets who can write and speak Palatinate dialect. The participants do not have to be born in the Palatinate; Usually poets from other German regions or from overseas also apply. This includes, for example, the US state of Pennsylvania , where a Palatine emigrant dialect, the Pennsylvania Dutch , has survived.

The competitions differ, for example, in terms of competition categories, requirements for the form of the contributions and assessment criteria.

The Palatine dialect poet contest in Bockenheim an der Weinstrasse has its own article:

Dialect competition, Dannstadter Höhe

overview

Dannstadter Höhe 2018

The Dannstadter Höhe dialect competition is announced annually by the community of Dannstadt-Schauernheim in the Upper Palatinate and the adult education center of the Rhein-Pfalz-Kreis . The final round is regularly held in May in the sub-community of Dannstadt, where in Hauptstr. 139 the Kulturhaus Zentrum Alte Schule is available, the main building of which, the former schoolhouse, is classified as a monument . In connection with a club anniversary, the 25th competition took place in the community of Rödersheim-Gronau , which is a few kilometers away .

history

The name of the third oldest competition in the Palatinate is derived from the Dannstadter Höhe , which is known for its agriculture, which focuses on growing vegetables. The height for its part is called after the originally larger town of today's double community Dannstadt-Schauernheim ; the term height has to be put into perspective; the geological embankment terrace is actually only a few meters above the level of the surrounding Rhine plain .

The Dannstadter Höhe dialect competition was launched in 1988 and has been held annually ever since. This was preceded by an extremely successful dialect competition on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the men's choir "Frohsinn Rödersheim" in 1987. In the first few years, the date was linked to the largest folk festival in Dannstadt-Schauernheim, the Radieselfest ; In 1991 the dialect competition was held on a date separate from this festival. Meinolf Schmid, the director of the Volkshochschule at the time, who has been a member of the jury from the start and also in his retirement, showed particular commitment in setting up the competition ; In 1997 he was honored with the Order of Merit of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate . Nikolaus Hofen, who chaired the jury from 1988 to 2018, received the state's medal of merit on the occasion of the 20th edition in 2007 .

Right from the start, the participants in the dialect competition must have a connection to the Palatinate and feel connected to the region between the Rhine and Haardt Mountains, but they do not have to live there. The winners now come from all over the area between the Neckar and Saar, Bienwald and Odenwald.

Preliminary round

The Dannstadter Höhe dialect competition takes place annually. Participants can submit their contributions in writing in two categories: poetry in dialect (1988 to 2017 under the term "poetry in dialect") and prose in dialect (since 1989). The closing date for entries is April 1st of each year. Each participant may submit a maximum of two contributions per category. An independent jury of dialect experts will select the best poems and prose from the submitted entries. During the evaluation, the jury pays particular attention to the content, dialect and clarity of the entry. The authors of the selected contributions are all award winners. Who wins the competition depends on the performance of the authors in the final.

final

If an author emerges from the preliminary round as the winner, he must present his contribution personally to the jury at the public final. The final takes place every year in May in the Alte Schule center in the Dannstadt district. In order to keep the Palatinate dialect alive as a spoken dialect, oral presentations have been even more important since 2018. A quarter of the result of the lecture is included in the final result. An essential part of the finals are the presentations by the winners and the subsequent award ceremony. In addition, there is traditionally a festive musical supporting program related to the dialect. On the occasion of the local jubilee of 1250 years of the Dannstadt-Schauernheim community in 2017 and 2018, a short play in Palatinate dialect was performed at the dialect competition Dannstadter Höhe 2018, which staged an old village legend from Dannstadt.

Main and special prices

Initially only poems were allowed, but in the second year a prose prize was awarded in addition to the poetry prize. One year later (1990) the special award from the Dannstadter Höhe culture and home district was added. This special award honors the participant whose dialect contribution reflects the culture, life, tradition or customs of the Palatinate region in a special way. In 1993 and 1994 there was a special award from the cjm publishing house, based in Speyer at the time. A prize for children's poems was announced for the first time in 1996. For the 11th competition in 1998, the final rhyme for poems that had been prescribed until then was canceled. In the years 2001 to 2009 the Dannstadt competition also awarded a prize for a "scenic representation". In addition, an audience award is now also being awarded. The first three places are endowed with cash prizes, from the fourth place onwards there are prizes in kind. The culture and homeland district of Dannstadter Höhe will award the Pälzer Gutsel Order from 2020. This prize is awarded to a person who is currently committed to the Palatinate dialect in an outstanding manner or has been committed to it for a long time.

jury

Jury spokesman Michael Landgraf

The decision on the competition result is made by a jury that works independently and on a voluntary basis. It is made up of professionals, most of whom have been in office since the beginning of the competition; four of them are or were themselves multiple award-winning dialect poets.

Jury members are or were

  • since 1988: Dr. Dr. Nikolaus Hofen ( Rödersheim-Gronau ), Germanist, Academic Director at the Institute for German Studies at the University of Koblenz-Landau i. R., dialect author, jury speaker 1988–2018

The previous year's winners have been supporting the jury during the current dialect competition since 2018.

Event

On average, 160 entries are submitted for each event, making the competition the one with the most applicants. These are divided into two literary categories: poetry (since 1988; since 1998 also poems without end rhymes ) and prose (since 1989). From 2001 to 2009, the staging division was also advertised. It was implemented so cautiously and sometimes with insufficient quality that it was withdrawn from the offer after nine years.

Prizes can be awarded in both categories. Each applicant can submit up to ten poems, but can only be awarded a prize once per competition. For the first time at the 22nd edition (2009), both the poem and the prose text of a participant were considered worthy of prizes in the preselection; the applicant Albert H. Keil finally entered the poetry category, in which he reached third place.

The jury makes a pre-selection for the final round according to a point system. The award is usually given to the ten best poems and the five best prose texts, whereby the subject and content, the purity of the dialect and the art of delivery influence the evaluation. An additional prize from the Kultur- und Heimatkreis Dannstadter Höhe e. V. is awarded to a participant "whose dialect text in poetry, prose or as a scenic representation reflects the culture, life, tradition or customs of the region in a special way." The jury occasionally awards an extra prize for various reasons , for example in 2007 and 2008.

Dialect poet competition Gonbach

overview

The Gonbach dialect poet contest was held annually by the local cultural and sports association in October or November in the northern Palatinate community of Gonbach . The competition was sponsored by the Winnweiler community and the district administrator of the Donnersbergkreis ; the district administrator also acted as patron.

history

The Gonbacher had the second longest tradition of the great Palatinate competitions. It was launched in 1984 by Waldemar Maas, who organized it until 2011. The only genre was initially poetry , longer than in the other Palatine dialect competitions, the end rhyme was also required in Gonbach . Not only did this requirement fall in 2008, since then the prose section has also been offered. In 2001, 2006 and 2007 the competition could not be held for organizational reasons. Because there was no successor for the organizer in 2011, the competition ended this year with the 25th edition.

jury

The decision on the result was made by a four-person jury that worked on a voluntary basis and independently. Music teacher and dialectologist Klaus Kronibus ( Enkenbach-Alsenborn ) was chairman from the start . The other jury members, who took turns depending on availability, were also educators by profession:

Event

Around 50 to 60 authors took part in each event. Everyone was allowed to submit a maximum of two contributions, either in a single section up to two or one in both sections. In 2008 the applicant Albert H. Keil won two prizes, one in each category. Since 2009, only one entry per participant has made it to the final round. The jury honored around ten entries, with the subject and content , the purity of the dialect and the art of presentation influencing the evaluation.

Sickinger dialect poet competition

overview

The Sickinger dialect poet contest is held every two years by the Thaleischweiler-Wallhalben community in the south-west of the Palatinate . The final round will take place during the historic "Grumberry Market" (potato market ) on the last weekend of September in the community hall of the Herschberg community, which is part of the association .

history

The name of the competition refers to the area in which it takes place, the Sickinger Höhe . This is named after the Imperial Knight Franz von Sickingen , who was fatally injured there in 1523 when he was bombarded at Nanstein Castle , which lies above the town of Landstuhl .

The competition was brought into being in 1991 by Willi Hack, the then head of the cultural office of the former Wallhalben community , who then looked after him organizationally for years. Initially , the invitation to tender was only aimed at poetry writers , but since 2001 the competition has also been open to prose texts . In comparison with the other Palatinate competitions, it is noticeable that a larger part of the competition entries contain language elements that were taken over from French into Palatinate during the temporary incorporation of today's Palatinate into neighboring France (1801–1814) . This is explained by the fact that the Sickinger Höhe is close to the border with France.

jury

The patron of the competition is the mayor of the Thaleischweiler-Wallhalben community. The decision on the result is made by a jury that works independently and on a voluntary basis. Your speakers are equal to Michael Dillinger and Wolfgang Ohler .

Jury members are or were

  • 1993–1999: Dr. Sigrid Bingenheimer ( Kaiserslautern ), linguist

  • 1991: Fred G. Schütz ( Höheischweiler ), journalist
  • 1991–2011: Albrecht Vogelsang ( Hauenstein ), local history researcher

Event

Between 50 and 100 authors take part in each event. The jury awards the ten best poems and prose texts, whereby the subject and content as well as the purity of the dialect influence the evaluation, while the art of the presentation is not taken into account.
