Gernot Plassnegger (born March 23, 1978 in Leoben ) is a former Austrian football player and now coach .
Career
As a player
Plassnegger began his career at home club FC Trofaiach. At the age of 19, the junior national player moved to Austria Salzburg via ASVÖ FC Puch . There he was able to win the Austrian championship in his second season under coach Heribert Weber , with whom he had already worked in Puch . After his contract expired, Plassnegger moved to Wiener Austria in 1998 . He ran for the capital club for two and a half years before signing with 1. FC Saarbrücken during the winter break of the 2000/01 season .
Plassnegger was able to recommend himself for a move to VfL Wolfsburg through a convincing second half of the season at the German second division club . In the VW city , however, he could not prevail, so that he was transferred back to the 2nd Bundesliga to SV Waldhof Mannheim on loan . Here, the Styrian was able to convince in the striker position and scored ten goals in 26 league games. In 2003 he made a new attempt at Hansa Rostock in the 1st Bundesliga. However, after he could not fight for a regular place on the Baltic Sea either, Plassnegger moved back to his Austrian homeland after a total of three and a half years in Germany .
He signed on with the reigning foreman GAK , where he was regularly used in various positions. In the spring of 2006, Plassnegger left the GAK again due to outstanding salary payments and moved to the Austrian record champions SK Rapid Vienna in June . For the capital city he played eleven times in a row for a full 90 minutes, but then had to vacate his place in the team due to injuries, which prompted him to move to SK Austria Kärnten again in 2007 . For the 2008/09 season, Gernot Plassenegger signed with the Greek first division club Ergotelis for three years. After ninth place and 25 appearances, he left Greece after one season and moved to FC Admira Wacker Mödling .
After 5 years with the Südstadt team, in which Gernot Plassnegger managed to get promoted to the Bundesliga and qualify for the UEFA Europa League in 139 games, the Styrian’s contract was not renewed in 2013. He then ended his career.
In total, Plassnegger played 53 times for junior teams of the ÖFB . On October 6, 2006 he also came in Vaduz in a 2-1 friendly game against Liechtenstein for his only appearance in the Austrian national team .
As a trainer
After the end of his career, Plassnegger was coach of the Grazer AK for the 2013-14 season . In September 2017 he became the coach of the second division club SC Austria Lustenau . After two years as coach of Lustenau, he resigned from his post in September 2019. At that point in time, Lustenau was 13th in the table after six match days.
In March 2020 he was a second time coach of the meanwhile second class Grazer AK.

Gernot Plassnegger is married to the event manager Verena Plassnegger and the father of three daughters Nina-Jasmin, Mavie and Suna.
