Under the name Velothon Berlin , a bicycle race for everyone is held annually in early summer in Berlin and a road bike race for elite and U23 riders until 2015 . The Jedermannrennen was first held in 2008 and is one of the largest of its kind in Europe. The elite race was added in 2011 and was called ProRace Berlin until 2013 . In 2017, around 11,500 participants and around 250,000 guests were reported.

organization

The operator of the race is Ironman Germany GmbH . The original operating company Upsolut Event GmbH belonged to the Lagardère Group , which renamed it Lagardère Unlimited Events Germany GmbH in 2013 . In January 2016, the World Triathlon Corporation , which is part of the Wanda Group , took over the company and merged it with its subsidiary Ironman Germany GmbH .

The Velothon Berlin is part of the UCI Velothon Majors event series , which also includes races in Edmonton, Stockholm , Sunshine Coast and Wales .

The title sponsor of the Velothon was Škoda until 2012 and Garmin from 2013 to 2015 . Garmin was also the title sponsor of ProRace Berlin in 2012 and 2013. In 2017 EuroEyes was the title sponsor.

For 2019 the race was canceled due to differences of opinion among the organizers.

Everyone race

Velothon logo

The basis of the Berlin cycling event was a race for everyone , which has been held since 2008 and has since become the second largest in Europe. The UCI race was only added three years later on a largely identical track. At the premiere in 2008, 10,225 amateur cyclists took part and around 250,000 spectators watched the race. There were two routes, 60 and 105 kilometers. The route was modified for the second Velothon, instead of a loop in the north of Berlin, one drove through the south. These and the distances of 60 and 120 kilometers have remained the same. In 2012, a good 12,000 cyclists took part and 220,000 spectators attended the route. An 82-year-old amateur driver suffered a heart attack during the race. It was the first death in the context of the Velothon.

Elite races

The Velothon Berlin elite race was the first international road bike race to be held in Germany since the Fuentes doping scandal in 2006. The one-day race is part of the UCI Europe Tour , where it is classified in UCI category 1.1. This classification allows UCI WorldTeams , UCI Professional Continental Teams , UCI Continental Teams and national teams to participate in the race. The event was suspended from 2016.

2011

In 2011 the course was 182.2 kilometers long and led over a 116-kilometer route through the south of Berlin and the bordering Brandenburg, followed by eight laps of 8.2 kilometers around the zoo . From the start at the Brandenburg Gate , the route led to Ludwigsfelde and back via Teltow , with sights such as Potsdamer Platz , the former Tempelhof Airport , the East Side Gallery and the government district on the way . The home straight was the Straße des 17. Juni from the Berlin Victory Column to the Brandenburg Gate. The inner city course was almost identical to the course of the route at the Tour de France in 1987 , when the prologue for the start of the tour took place in West Berlin. In 2012, the route was 186 kilometers long and led back to Berlin via Teltow, Ruhlsdorf , Ludwigsfelde and Tempelhof, some of which were driven on the blocked B 101 . The inner city course was 8.2 kilometers long, the start and finish were on Straße des 17. Juni.

A breakaway group had pulled away shortly after the start and was at times in the lead for six minutes, but was caught again one kilometer from the finish. In the finish sprint, Marcel Kittel ( Skil-Shimano ) prevailed against Giacomo Nizzolo ( Leopard-Trek ) from Italy and the Russian Alexej Markow (national team), Rüdiger Selig (national team) and Florian Monreal ( team Eddy Merckx-Indeland ) took fourth place and five, a total of five Germans were among the top ten.
