Before the start of the season, seven-time tour winner Lance Armstrong announced his comeback with the Astana team of his sporting director's tour winner Johan Bruyneel . Armstrong officially wanted to advertise his cancer aid Livestrong . Surprisingly, he also started at the centenary edition of the Giro d'Italia 2009 and finished 12th there, although he had recently broken a collarbone. In the Tour de France he started together with Alberto Contador . There the rivalry between Armstrong and Contador dominated the headlines. Contador won his second Tour of France after 2007, Armstrong was third at the age of 37, and Andreas Klöden was 6th overall for Astana, which also won the team classification and the team time trial. After the tour, Alexander Vinokurow returned to Astana after his doping ban and competed in the Vuelta a España . Lance Armstrong then announced that he would set up his own team for the coming year. Ultimately, Astana, which was also unable to pay salaries in 2009, lost the entire tour team to Armstrong's new team, RadioShack , with the exception of Contador . Bruyneel also moved there.
