Pro Team Astana / 2007 season

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This article discusses the course of the 2007 season, the team Astana .

Season course

The team's greatest successes include the overall victory of Andreas Klöden in the Tirreno-Adriatico stage race and the two stage victories of Paolo Savoldelli in the Tour de Romandie and Giro d'Italia as well as four stage victories at the Critérium du Dauphiné Libéré , including three by Alexandre Vinokourov and one by Antonio Colom . Eddy Mazzoleni also took third place at the Giro d'Italia.

However, these successes were overshadowed by doping scandals . Kessler and Mazzoleni were dismissed for doping offenses prior to the 2007 Tour de France . During the tour, Vinokurov won the time trial in Albi and the mountainous 15th stage in the Pyrenees . A day later, on the rest day, it became known that he had tested positive for doping with foreign blood when he won his first stage . The entire Astana team then withdrew from the Tour de France. Andrei Kashechkin was later convicted of doping. As a result of these scandals, the organizers of the Vuelta a España withdrew the team's invitation for the three-week tour of Spain beginning on September 1st.

In September 2007, team manager Biver was replaced by the former Discovery manager and Lance Armstrong confidante Johan Bruyneel , who was later banned for life because of his involvement in the Armstrong doping affair. The team apparently ran into financial difficulties after the sponsors' withdrawal.
