Purba Champaran is a district in the Indian state of Bihar . After Patna , it is the most populous district in Bihar.
The area is 3968 km². The administrative seat is the city of Motihari .
history
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi developed what is known as Satyagraha ( search for truth ) here when he spent time in Motihari in 1917 .
population
The population is 5,099,371 (2011). The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 29.43% and was therefore very high. Purba Champaran has a gender ratio of 902 women per 1000 men. The district has a literacy rate of 55.79% in 2011, an increase of almost 18 percentage points compared to 2001. However, literacy is well below the national average. Almost 80% of the population are Hindus and around 19% are Muslim . The Bhojpuri language is common in the district.
Almost 7.9% of the population live in cities. The largest city in the district was Motihari with 126,158 inhabitants.
