Rated R or just R - titled Rated X or X in the vinyl version - is the second studio album by the American rock band Queens of the Stone Age . It was recorded between December 1999 and February 2000 in Van Nuys , California and released on June 6, 2000 via Interscope Records .

Success and reception

The album was largely positively received by music critics when it was released.

Steve Huey calls the album in his Allmusic - review as pioneering in the field of modern rock music of the new millennium and awarded five stars out of 5.

In his review of Rated R, Spence D. from IGN Entertainment particularly emphasizes the balance between fun and formality - "It's this expert balance of fun and formality is what makes the album damn near essential." - which makes the album seem almost essential .

Martin Mengele from laut.de describes Rated R as “… a colorful variety of songs that Chris Goss reconnects to a unity through his bluesy presence.” And awards 4 out of 5 possible points.

NME.com certifies that the major label - debut of the band big impact and awards for 9 out of 10 possible points.

Matthias Allstadt from Plattentests.de, on the other hand, attests to the Queens of the Stone Age having finally made it into the “Stoner Rock Olympus” with a Rated R and also awards 9 out of 10 possible points for it.

In his review for the Rolling Stone music magazine, Ben Ratliff awarded 3.5 out of 5 possible points. He emphasized the production quality and the variety of styles that was achieved for the album in cooperation with producer Chris Goss.

The American online music service Rhapsody put the album at number 1 on its list of the best rock albums of the decade (2000-2010).

Despite the good reviews, the album was not able to record any notable successes alongside number 35 in the Norwegian charts, number 54 in Great Britain and number 72 in Germany.

Single releases

The tracks Feel Good Hit of the Summer , Monsters in the Parasol and The Lost Art of Keeping a Secret were released as singles. Only The Lost Art of Keeping a Secret, however, was able to record significant successes in the charts. A publication of the piece Never Say Never took place for promotional purposes .

The limited edition released in the UK by Interscope Records contains four bonus tracks on a separate bonus CD, which corresponds exactly to the track list of the Feel Good Hit of the Summer single.

Re-release as a Deluxe Edition

Universal Music re-released the album on August 6, 2010 via its sub-label Interscope Records to mark the tenth anniversary of its initial release. The re-release took the form of a double CD, the first CD containing the regular album, the second CD containing B-sides and live recordings.
