Robin and Marian (Original title: Robin and Marian ) is an American adventure film by director Richard Lester from 1976 with Sean Connery and Audrey Hepburn in the title roles.

action

The aging Robin Hood is still a loyal and reliable fighter for King Richard the Lionheart long after their crusade together . When the king instructs him to take a castle in the south of France , which is believed to be a great treasure, he refuses, however, as it is only inhabited by an old man and harmless women and children. Richard is a domineering and inhuman tyrant who then orders Robin's death. Robin and Little John are thrown in the dungeon and Lionheart is badly wounded by an arrow thrown by the old man. Richard orders the castle to be pillaged and the residents slaughtered - except for the old man.

When Richard gets drunk, he pardons Robin and Little John , after which he dies. Robin and Little John then return to England . They reunite with their old friends in Sherwood Forest who are still living there from raids. They learn that Lady Marian has become a nun. Robin seeks her out, and she still finds it as impossible as it used to be. Robin finds out that his old enemy, the Sheriff of Nottingham , has arrested Marian. She agreed, but Robin frees her against her will. When she asks him if he's had enough of the killing, Robin describes the atrocities they wreaked havoc on the Muslim population in Palestine under Richard's orders . Sometimes the entire population of cities, including women and children, was slaughtered. Robin reveals himself to Marian as a traumatized man.

The sheriff and also Robin gather their men around them. But both agree on a duel. Robin manages to kill the sheriff, but is seriously injured in the fight. The sheriff's men attack and disperse Robin's troop. Little John and Marian help Robin back to the monastery. There he talks about going back and continuing his old life. John stands guard while Marian prepares medicine for Robin. When he can no longer move his legs, he calls out for Little John, while Marian explains to him that she has poisoned him and at the same time expresses her boundless love for him.

Robin realizes that he will never be the same man again, that he will never have a more glorious day than today. Marian, who also drank the poison, says: “I love you. More than anything you know I love you more than children. More than the fields I've worked with my hands. I love you more than morning prayers or peace or food to eat. I love you more than sunlight, more than flesh or joy, or another day. I love you ... more than God. ”Little John cries and is comforted by Robin. Robin takes the bow and tells John to bury it with Marian where the arrow lands. He shoots the arrow from his deathbed through the open window.

background

The production studio Columbia Pictures initially wanted Albert Finney as Robin Hood, while Sean Connery should play Little John. This and Robert Shaw had already portrayed opponents in the Bond film James Bond 007 - Greetings from Moscow in 1963 . The film, which was originally to be called The Death of Robin Hood , was Audrey Hepburn's first work after a nine-year family break; She was paid a million dollars for her six weeks of filming. Filming took place in Pamplona and Navarra , Spain . The castle shown in the film is Villalonso Castle in Zamora .

In its own way, the film reflects the Vietnam War , which had just ended , and is a forerunner in the critical drawing of lunatic military leaders that later appeared more frequently in popular films such as Apocalypse Now (1979).

Reviews

Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times said in April 1976 that the film had been saved from "getting bogged down" thanks to the "acting skills of Sean Connery and Audrey Hepburn." Despite the director and screenwriter's assessment, “Connery and Hepburn share a quiet understanding of themselves and their characters. You shine. You really seem to be in love ”. The film service found that Robin and Marian had "[attempted] an ironic revision of the coat-and-epee classic, [...] but not [found] a convincing style". The film is "a more conventional costume adventure with sentimental nuances".

" Robin and Marian was not a box office success and yet it is the aesthetically, intellectually and politically boldest cinematic implementation of the Robin Hood legend that has ever been made," said Andrew James Johnston in Robin Hood. Story of a legend . Judith Klinger expressed herself in Robin Hood. In search of a legend : “Washed out gray, green and brown tones replace the rich, sparkling colors of earlier cinema spectacles. From such a critical point of view, the myth of Robin Hood disintegrates into a conglomerate of naivety, misguided idealism and the formation of legends. If there is still more than mere disillusionment, the charisma of the leading actors [...] contributes significantly. "

On Rotten Tomatoes , Robin and Marian has a positive rate of 76% (29 reviews were evaluated for this).
