Roseanne Barr
Roseanne Cherrie Barr (born November 3, 1952 in Salt Lake City , Utah ) is an American comedian , actress , presenter , author , producer and politician . She was best known for the sitcom Roseanne (1988–1997, 2018).
biography
Barr's mother Helen worked as an accountant and cashier, her father Hershel "Jerry" worked as a representative for various companies. The Barr family, whose original name was "Borisofsky", is of Jewish descent and can trace its roots to Russia , Lithuania , Austria-Hungary and the Ukraine . When she was 16, Roseanne was hit by a car and barely survived.
In 1974 she married Bill Pentland; they have three children in common named Jennifer, Jessica and Jacob. Barr had given birth to their illegitimate daughter, Brandi Brown, as early as 1971 and put them up for adoption. The two only met 18 years later; since then Brown has worked intermittently for her mother.
Barr initially worked in her early years as a shop window - decorator and waitress in Denver . Occasionally she also worked as a prostitute in order to survive. From the 1980s she developed into one of the most popular stand-up comedians in the United States and portrayed the typical housewife of the American working class for her audience. After she was able to expand her profile through a few appearances on television, she tried herself in 1987 with her own special, The Roseanne Barr Show, which won her an American Comedy Award .
In 1988 the sitcom Roseanne started on the broadcaster ABC , which ran successfully for nine years and should bring Barr the breakthrough as a comedian and actress. Again, she portrayed a worker housewife named "Roseanne Conner", at the side of John Goodman as her husband "Dan" and Laurie Metcalf as her sister "Jackie". In this series the typical problems of the American working class families as well as u. a. also took up homosexuality , discrimination , violence and other taboo topics. Barr was also responsible for several episodes as a producer , screenwriter and director . The series was modeled on Barr's experiences with her actual family. There were numerous artistic differences between her and the other screenwriter Matt Williams as to how the series should develop, which culminated in Williams' departure after the thirteenth episode.
On the set of Roseanne , Barr fell in love with the series' producer and supporting actor, Tom Arnold . Shortly after her divorce from Bill Pentland, she married Arnold in 1990; but the marriage lasted barely four years.
In 1989 she made the leap to international cinema screens as an opponent of Meryl Streep in the black comedy The Devil, based on the novel The Life and Loves of a She-Devil by the British feminist Fay Weldon . Her autobiography My Life as a Woman was published in the same year . In the following years Barr appeared again and again in smaller roles in various cinema and television films. In 1990 she lent her voice to the baby "Julie" in the successful film comedy Look who speaks 2 and was then nominated for the Golden Raspberry for Worst Supporting Actress. The devil has been her only leading role in the cinema so far.
In 1991, Roseanne Barr told People magazine that she was physically and sexually abused by her parents. The parents denied the allegations. Her sister Geraldine worked as her manager for several years. In 1990 Barr resigned from Geraldine. Her sister's lawsuit for $ 70 million was unsuccessful. In the dispute, her sister also accused her of fabricating the abuse by her parents and of having been manipulated by her then husband Tom Arnold.
On July 25, 1990, she caused a scandal when she sang the American national anthem The Star-Spangled Banner with a completely crooked intonation before the start of a baseball game in San Diego, California and, at the request of baseball officials, to bring comedy into the presentation, spat on the floor after the national anthem was a parody of typical baseball player behavior. She commented on this incident with “I was trying to be funny. Sometimes you can't tell if it's funny or not, I guess. " (" I tried to be funny. Sometimes you just can't say whether it's funny or not, I think. ") And later parodied him a few times even on TV.
Over the next several years, Barr had several cosmetic surgeries; these physical changes and developments can be observed in her series Roseanne . Barr later said that some of these operations were done for health reasons, including: a. a breast reduction to relieve the back.
In 1991/1992 she hosted four episodes of the successful entertainment show Saturday Night Live . She has also hosted other events such as Free to Laugh: A Comedy and Music Special for Amnesty International 1992 and the 1994 MTV Movie Awards . In 1993 she received the Golden Globe Award and the Emmy for her role as Roseanne . In 1995 she married the actor Ben Thomas, with whom they have a son, but divorced him in 2002. From May 1997 she played the "Witch of the West" in the theater adaptation of The Wizard of Oz in Madison Square Garden .
In the following years Barr had guest appearances in various television series, u. a. at General Hospital , Futurama , The Nanny, and My Name Is Earl . From 1998 to 2000 she had her own talk show called The Roseanne Show, which, unlike the sitcom Roseanne, was unsuccessful. In the summer of 2003, she tried to present the cooking show Domestic Goddess, while the reality show The Real Roseanne Show - which centered on the moderation of Domestic Goddess - was supposed to run, but due to Barr's uterine disease, both programs were promptly canceled and not again recorded. In 2007 she hosted a season of The Search for the Funniest Mom in America. In 2011 she published her book Roseannearchy: Dispatches from the Nut Farm .
Barr criticized other celebrities very sharply on her blog, and her attack on Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt in particular caused outrage in the tabloids . She accused Pitt and Jolie of "mindless" staging of donations that make up only a fraction of their income from "psychotic" films, but stated that she only attacked the media image and not the people they did not know.
Barr enjoys the status of a “ marijuana patient ” (“Medical-Marijuana-Patient”) for medical reasons , who can legally purchase cannabis products in the appropriate dispensaries, and is committed to full legalization of cannabis .
Political positions
Barr announced in 2011 that he would run for the 2012 presidential election in the United States with a new Green Tea Party . However, Barr did not get enough votes from the Greens, so that she was elected as their candidate on August 4 and 5, 2012 at the Peace and Freedom Party congress. Some of her agenda items include gays and lesbian equality, the legalization of the drug marijuana as a drug, and changes in the banking system to end “people's slavery”.
In the period that followed, Barr moved closer and closer to Donald Trump's environment and spread conspiracy theories from the extreme right-wing spectrum of Trump supporters, such as the claim repeated by QAnon that high-ranking members of the Democratic Party were involved in an international child trafficking ring . She tried to get in touch with QAnon on Twitter.
In May 2018, she was fired from her broadcaster ABC after a racist tweet about African-American politician Valerie Jarrett .
In early April 2020, Barr said in an interview that the Covid-19 pandemic was a plan to eradicate their wealthy generation and get their fortunes. She did not specify who was carrying out this plan.
