Ruairi Quinn ( Irish Ruairí Ó Cuinn ; born April 2, 1946 in Dublin ) is an Irish politician, former party leader of the Irish Labor Party , member of the Dáil Éireann since 1982 and was education minister in the cabinet of Enda from March 2011 until the cabinet reshuffle in July 2014 Kenny .

Quinn attended Blackrock College in Dublin and studied architecture at University College Dublin . From 1971 to 1982 Quinn, who has also worked as an architect since 1969, was a lecturer in architecture and urban planning at the School of Architecture , a faculty of University College Dublin. In 1982 he gave up these activities in order to devote himself entirely to his political activities.

Quinn's political career began in 1974 when he became a member of the Dublin City Council . He held this office until 1977. In the same year he was elected to the Dáil Éireann for the first time, after his previous attempt to be elected to the lower house of the Irish Parliament in 1973 had failed. In the elections for the 22nd Dáil Éireann, however, he was unable to defend his seat and resigned from parliament in 1981. Quinn succeeded in re-entering the Dail in the next election in February 1982. Since then he has been Teachta Dála without interruption. He was also Senator in the Seanad Éireann from 1976 to 1977 and 1981 to 1982 .

In 1990 Quinn became his party's vice chairman and replaced Dick Spring as party chairman in 1997 when he took office in November. In October 2002 he resigned from the party leadership. The new party chairman was Pat Rabbitte .

In the 1980s and 90s, Quinn held various ministerial posts. He was 1982-1983 Minister of State (Minister of State for the Environment) , 1984-1987 Minister of Labor, 1986-1987 Minister of Public Service, and from 1993 to 1994 Minister of Enterprise and Employment and Minister of Finance from 1994 to 1997. Since 1998 Quinn has been vice chairman and treasurer of the Party of European Socialists .

In addition to his political activities, he is also a member of the Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland and Amnesty International .

Quinn has a son and daughter from a previous marriage and has been remarried since 1990; in October 1994 he became father of a son again. The politician Oisín Quinn is his nephew.
