Maroon 5 is an American pop-rock - group from Los Angeles , the 2004 songs like This Love or She Will Be Loved released from their 2002 album Songs About Jane international notoriety gained. It emerged from the band Kara's Flowers , founded in 1994 .

history

Kara's Flowers

Three of the band members had known each other since they attended junior high school in Los Angeles. When they attended Brentwood School, Adam Levine, Mickey Madden and Ryan Dusick, who were already making music together, joined in and formed the band Kara's Flowers , a garage rock / grunge band that made their first appearance in Whiskey A Go-Go on September 16, 1995. At that time Adam Levine was still singing in a deeper grunge voice.

While the band members were still in high school , the band signed a deal with Reprise Records and released their only album, The Fourth World , in 1997 , just as three of the four members were graduating from high school (Ryan Dusick was sophomore at the University of California, Los) Angeles ). A video was made for Soap Disco , the first track on the album, but it was unsuccessful on MTV . Despite touring with Reel Big Fish and Goldfinger , the album hardly made any money. In 1999 the band split from Reprise Records. Due to the later popularity of Maroon 5, more copies of The Fourth World were sold after Songs About Jane than in the time before.

After breaking up with Reprise Records, the musicians went to four different colleges across the United States . During this time they discovered new styles of music and developed preferences for pop, R&B, soul and gospel, which would later strongly influence the style and sound of Maroon 5. The four members of Kara's Flowers stayed in touch and started making music together again in 2001. Since Jesse Carmichael had switched from guitar to keyboard, they needed a new guitarist. This one was found with James Valentine, who had previously played in the band Square .

Maroon 5 is founded

Adam Levine

When James Valentine joined the band, the band adopted the name Maroon and changed it to Maroon 5 a few months later due to a naming conflict. Adam Levine described in an interview with VH1 how this period influenced the band's new style:

“During the time of our record label contracts, I spent a lot of time in New York, where I got to know an urban and hip-hop culture that I had never encountered in LA. That stimulated me to a completely new genre of music, which had a profound influence on my songwriting. "

In 2001 Maroon 5 signed a contract with Octone Records , an independent label in New York.

Songs About Jane

Maroon 5 recorded their debut album Songs About Jane in Los Angeles with producer Matt Wallace, who had worked with bands like Blues Traveler and Third Eye Blind . Many of the songs on the album were directly inspired by Adam Levine's tumultuous relationship with ex-girlfriend Jane. Levine said about the name of the album:

“We were just finishing up when the band started recording in the studio. After compiling a list of songs, we decided to name the album Songs About Jane because we felt that we could make the most honest statement with this title. "

She Will Be Loved is played in the film With You by My Side and is also on the soundtrack for the film.

Reshuffle

On September 12, 2006 it was announced on the official website of Maroon 5 that Ryan Dusick was no longer the band's drummer. Due to persistent shoulder problems, which cause severe pain while playing the drums, he had to announce his resignation. He was replaced by Matt Flynn, who had represented Ryan Dusick for over two years. However, Ryan Dusick had not completely withdrawn from the band after he left the band. He was the musical director of the album It Won't Be Soon Before Long , which was released in 2007.

Hands all over

In September 2010 the band released their third studio album, Hands All Over . In the German-speaking countries it was able to place itself in the top 20 of the respective album charts immediately after its release, although it could not build on the success of its predecessors. On August 29, 2011, a re-edition of the album was released, which contained two additional tracks with Moves Like Jagger (feat. Christina Aguilera ) and a cover of the Queen hit Crazy Little Thing Called Love . Moves Like Jagger in particular quickly established itself as a hit and placed second on the German single charts .

Overexposed

On March 9, 2012, the band announced that founding member, keyboardist, rhythm guitarist and background vocalist Jesse Carmichael was separating from the band for an indefinite period. The band would continue work on their fourth studio album with the help of PJ Morton , who had been touring the band for quite some time. Maroon 5 later posted a message on their homepage that their fourth studio album, Overexposed , would be released on June 22, 2012 . The first single, Payphone , was released on April 16, 2012 and was recorded with Wiz Khalifa . There are also eleven other new songs on the album. Adam Levine described the new album as “the most complex and at the same time the most pop album that [they] have ever made. […] “ Payphone reached number 1 in Great Britain.

The second single from the album, One More Night , was released on September 21, 2012 in Germany and reached number 42 in the charts, while it was able to fight its way to the top of the charts in the USA. Two other singles, Daylight (released worldwide in November 2012) and Love Somebody (released worldwide in May 2013), were also very successful in many countries.

V and Red Pill Blues

On April 15, 2014, Jesse confirmed Carmichael to end his two-year hiatus and want to return to the band. Later, on May 19, 2014, Maroon 5 announced on their website that they had signed a contract with Interscope Records to record their fifth studio album, V (the correct pronunciation of this title is "Five"). In Germany it was released on August 29, 2014. The album was recorded from 2013 to 2014 with producers Max Martin, Benny Blanco, Ryan Tedder, Shellback and Sam Martin. In addition, a contract was signed with Live Nation for a worldwide tour.

The first single Maps was released in Germany on August 1, 2014, the second single, Animals , on August 24, 2014. It Was Always You was also released on July 29, 2014 as a promotional single .

The band's longtime manager, Jordan Feldstein (brother of Jonah Hill and Beanie Feldstein ) died in December 2017, just weeks after the release of their sixth studio album, Red Pill Blues . On the occasion of the recordings, the multi-instrumentalist Sam Farrar, who had accompanied the band as a live musician since 2012, was accepted as a full member.

style

By joining Valentine, the band's style expanded to include elements of soul, funk and rhythm & blues. Other influences of the band include Prince and AC / DC . Critics also compared the songs to Red Hot Chili Peppers ( She Will Be Loved ), a teenage Stevie Wonder ( Sunday Morning ), The Police ( Won't Go Home Without You ) and the Beach Boys .

On the second album It Won't Be Soon Before Long , the style was initially a little harder due to the new drummer Matt Flynn. Since the third album, however, the rock influences have been pushed back more and more in favor of danceable electronic music, which has not only met with enthusiasm from fans and critics.
