Until the second half of the 20th century, Saint-Saphorin (Lavaux) was predominantly an agricultural village. Even today, viticulture on the perfectly sunny slopes of Lavaux (around 40 hectares) has an important role in the income structure of the population. Further jobs are available in the service sector (wine cellars and shops). Today the industry is also geared towards tourism. In the last few decades the village has developed into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work primarily in Lausanne and the Vevey - Montreux region.

The community has good transport connections. It is located on the main road 9 , which leads from Lausanne along the lakeshore via Vevey and Montreux into the Valais . The next motorway connection to the A9 (Lausanne-Sion), which opened in 1974, is at Chexbres , around 3 km from the town. On April 2, 1861, the Lausanne-Villeneuve section of the Lausanne- Valais railway line went into operation with a station in Saint-Saphorin.

history

The municipality of Saint-Saphorin (Lavaux) was already inhabited in Roman times. Remains of a Roman villa and a milestone from that time have been found. Traces have also been preserved from the early Christian and Burgundian periods. The first written mention of the place took place in 1134 under the name de Sancto Sufforiano . The names Sanctus Simphorianus (1228), S. Safurin (1256) and Saymsafurin (1284) appeared later . The place name, which was Sansaphorinum in Latin , goes back to the sacred symphories of Autun .

Since the 12th century Saint-Saphorin (Lavaux) was under the bishop of Lausanne. With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536, the village came under the administration of the Bailiwick of Lausanne . After the collapse of the Ancien Régime , Saint-Saphorin (Lavaux) belonged to the canton of Léman from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic , which then became part of the canton of Vaud when the mediation constitution came into force . In 1798 it was assigned to the Lavaux district. It was not until 1810 that the large parish of Saint-Saphorin was divided into the now politically independent parishes of Chexbres, Puidoux, Rivaz and Saint-Saphorin (Lavaux).

Attractions

Saint-Saphorin church

The first church building was probably built in the 1st or 2nd century AD. An early Christian mausoleum took its place in the 5th century, and a medieval church in the 11th century, which was in turn replaced by a new building in 1520–1530, today's Reformed Church of Saint-Symphorien. The three-aisled church in the Gothic Flamboyant style has a Renaissance portal , an important stained glass and near the main entrance a walled-in Roman milestone and a Roman altar.

Saint-Saphorin (Lavaux) has a picturesque medieval townscape with narrow streets and characteristic winegrowers' houses from the 16th to 19th centuries. The rectory with an arcade floor dates from the 16th century. The Auberge de l'Onde still has an inn sign from 1750.

On the viewing platform just before the entrance to St.-Saphorin is the monument of Jean Villard Gilles , an artist who wrote the chanson “St.-Saphorin aux deux visages” about the wine-growing village. As an additional thank you, the local winemakers planted some vines right next to the memorial.

The hamlet of Glérolles used to be located on the lakeshore west of Saint-Saphorin (Lavaux). Today only Glérolles Castle, which was built at the beginning of the 14th century, remains . Only the tower remains of the original structure, but it was reduced in size in the 19th century. The residential buildings adjoining the tower to the east date from the 15th and 16th centuries; further changes were made in the 19th century.
