The Samsung Galaxy S5 (model number SM-G900F , SM-G900I etc., or SM-G901F as a plus version) is a smartphone that was presented by the manufacturer Samsung on February 24, 2014 at the GSMA Mobile World Congress in Barcelona . It is the successor to the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the predecessor of the Samsung Galaxy S6 from the Samsung Galaxy range . The official market launch price in Germany was 699 euros.

The smartphone has a 5.1 inch full HD Super AMOLED screen with a resolution of 1920 × 1080 pixels (1080p). Compared to the previous model, the Galaxy S5 has a 0.11 inch (0.25 cm) longer screen diagonal and a pixel density that is 9 ppi lower.
System-on-a-chip
The System-on-a-Chip is a Snapdragon 801 clocked at 2.5 GHz with four cores from Qualcomm , consisting of a Krait 400 processor and an Adreno 330 graphics unit. The instruction set of the Qualcomm processor Krait 400 is based on the ARM architecture ARMv7.
USB 3.0 port
As a second smartphone, the Galaxy S5, in addition to the Galaxy Note 3, is equipped with a downward-compatible USB 3.0 port, which enables faster file and data transfer speeds than the USB 2.0 interface of the previous series.
Much wider sockets and plugs, a thicker cable and larger plugs are used for this. The plug-in contour is constricted asymmetrically, and the - 3: 2 - wider part (right) fits a standard micro-USB connector, which later devices can get by on their own.

The camera offers an autofocus, a Macro mode and has an LED flash, but no optical (OIS), but only a software-technical image stabilizer for photos and videos. The autofocus can bring images into focus in 0.3 seconds up to a near point distance of 7 cm. The camera also has a selective focus with slow motion function and real-time HDR: When HDR is activated, you can see in the camera viewfinder how the mode affects a subject. HDR photos can now also be taken in series photo mode. 360-degree panorama photos are also possible. The front camera has a 2.1 megapixel sensor with a resolution of 1920 × 1080 pixels and is designed for video telephony and video chat.
When using the HDR mode , the Galaxy S5 can take photos, including bursts, in full resolution. HDR videos are recorded up to 1080p (even with the video stabilizer switched on), and still images even in full sensor resolution (5312 × 2988 pixels).
Others
As with the Galaxy S4, the S5 does not have an FM radio chip installed.
IP67 certification
Another innovation is the IP67 certification , which means that the Samsung Galaxy S5 is dustproof and offers protection against temporary submersion (up to 30 minutes in a maximum of one meter of water). Only the Sony Xperia Z and the Motorola Moto X offer something similar in the top models from other manufacturers . Because of this water protection, repairing the hardware has become much more complex. Authentication
The Galaxy S5 is the first smartphone that can be used to authenticate according to the free industry standard Universal Authentication Framework (UAF) from the FIDO Alliance . The user authenticates himself with the payment service provider PayPal using a fingerprint .
Color versions
Galaxy S5 - and also S5 mini - appeared in black, white, blue and gold. The predecessors S4 and S4 mini were only available in black and white ( Black Mist , White Frost ). The four narrow sides of all cases are formed by a shiny metallic bandage, made of plastic with a galvanized metal coating, always shiny, purely silvery, but with a darker tint for the S4 white models and a golden tone for the S5 gold models . In all cases, the main color is the polycarbonate cover on the back, which on the S4 ... is structured optically with mica in black or a diagonal grid in white, which in the latter case only shows a hint of the surface. All 4 color variants of the S5 ... models have dimples in the matt and soft-coated plastic, arranged in a square grid with 29 × 58 lines. This contributes to a non- slip feel . The back cover of the black S5 is rather dark gray. Color composition: The front glass, which is continuous except for the loudspeaker exit and the home button, appears only white (on the S4 ... with a delicate diagonal grid) or black, because the S5 ... color versions blue and gold also have a black panel. The company logo "SAMSUNG" is always printed in silver on the outside of the front glass and on the back cover.
Back cover
On S4 and S5, the back cover can be gripped with a fingernail at an approximately 1 × 9 mm small gap at the top left and thus, starting at this corner, can be pulled off the body. The thin cover made of injection-molded polycarbonate is twisted about 15-30 ° in the longitudinal axis, 18 (S5) and 16 (S4 mini) small snap hooks click one after the other from the hollows of the plastic body. Only the S5, which is waterproof to a limited extent, has an integrated rubber seal with a lip with an asymmetrical profile on the inside. The S5 is sealed with a contour that only encloses the compartment for the battery, SIM and memory card, as well as windows to five electrical, spring-loaded gold contacts, to the circuit board and the humidity sensor. A bar and three supports, which protrude from the inside of the back cover, are only supported next to the battery on the body, so that there is room for a slight possible bulging of the battery.
The area covered by the seal makes up a little more than half of the estimated 100 cm 2 footprint of the S5. A retrofit antenna for inductive charging is attached to the bottom three of the five gold contacts, but this prevents water tightness. Samsung developed a back wall with inductive Qi charging function , but stopped delivering it in March 2017; this back wall makes the S5 about 1 mm thicker, which means that the usual cases no longer fit.
Software / operating system
The Galaxy S5 was originally shipped in 2014 with the Android 4.4.3 (KitKat) operating system . Versions 5.1 (Lollipop) and the last 6.0.1 (Marshmallow) came later via over-the-air update . All have the TouchWiz user interface familiar from previous Samsung smartphones .

Samsung Galaxy S5 Neo
The S5 Neo (model number SM-G903F ) is a revised version of the original model. Instead of a processor from Qualcomm, an in-house development is used, namely the Exynos 7580 with eight cores in 64-bit architecture and 1.6 GHz clock frequency, which, however, does not quite come close to the performance of the Snapdragon 801 built into the normal Galaxy S5. The battery in both devices has a capacity of 2800 mAh . The improved camera modules of the Samsung Galaxy S6 are already used in the S5 Neo , but without the optical image stabilizer available there. While the image quality has increased significantly compared to the original Galaxy S5, especially in poor lighting conditions, the real-time HDR preview and the "Dual Camera" and "Shoot & More" recording modes have been removed and video recording has been reduced to a maximum resolution of 1920 × 1080 pixels Limited to 30 frames per second. Other technical differences concern the front camera, which now has a resolution of 5 megapixels, the USB port (only 2.0 standard instead of 3.0) and the modem that supports LTE Advanced category 6 (up to 300 Mbit / s). The range of functions has been greatly reduced in the S5 Neo as in the S6: AirView, gesture control, Smart Screen (Smart Pause, Smart Scroll, Smart Rotation), many menu functions and other functions have been removed. The optics of the Neo model have only been slightly revised and will be delivered with the Android 5.1 Lollipop operating system with TouchWiz NatureUX 5.0 (like the Samsung Galaxy S6). A use of the QI charging function via an exchangeable rear cover is not intended, unlike the S5.
Samsung Galaxy S5 mini (SM-G800F)
The Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini is a more compact version of the main model with a similarly designed housing but with fewer features.
The camera has a resolution of only 8 instead of 16 megapixels .
The video camera, for example, can only film up to 30 frames per second at 1080p . The 2160p (4K) recording mode and slow motion mode are completely eliminated.
The AMOLED screen also only has a resolution of 720p instead of 1080p.
Samsung Galaxy S5 Sport
The "Samsung Galaxy S5 Sport " variant , like the Samsung Galaxy S5 Active , places additional emphasis on robustness in terms of design.

Samsung Galaxy S6
The Samsung Galaxy S6 is the direct successor to the Galaxy S5. It was presented on March 1st, 2015 at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The camera of the S6 has an optical image stabilizer and with ƒ / 1.9 instead of ƒ / 2.2 a larger aperture, but no higher resolution (16 megapixels). However, the device is no longer waterproof, no longer has a removable battery or microSD slot, and has a smaller battery capacity.
