The Saudi Professional League 2016/17 was the 42nd season of the highest Saudi Arabian football league since it was founded in 1976. The season began on August 11, 2016 and ended on May 4, 2017. The defending champion was al-Ahli .

mode

The clubs played a double round tournament , which resulted in a total of 26 games per team. The game was played according to the 3-point rule (three points per win, one point per tie). The table was determined according to the following criteria:

  1. Number of points scored
  2. Number of points scored in direct comparison
  3. Goal difference in direct comparison
  4. Number of goals in direct comparison
  5. Goal difference from all games
  6. Number of goals in all games

At the end of the season, the two teams with the highest points qualified for the group stage of the AFC Champions League 2018 . Originally, since the champions were also able to win the cup, the third-placed finisher should also qualify for the group phase and the league winner for the play-off round of the Champions League. However, as neither of them received a license and there were no suitable substitutes, the two positions remained vacant.

The two teams with the fewest points rose to the second-class Saudi First Division from the 12 played in two relegation matches against the third of the Saudi First Division 2016/17 to relegation .

Al-Ettifaq returned to the Saudi Professional League as champion of the Saudi First Division in 2015/16 after a two-year absence . The second climber, al-Batin , played for the first time in the club's history in the highest Saudi Arabian league. Al-Batin initially failed in the relegation games against al-Raed , but was then allowed to rise anyway. The reason for this was that the original champions of the First Division, the al-Mojzel Club , had to be relegated to the Second Division due to match-fixing .

The two promoted teams replaced the last two clubs in the 2015/16 season , Najran SC and Hajer Club . The Hajer Club had to return to the Saudi First Division after two years in the Saudi Professional League. For Najran SC, the relegation meant the end of his nine-year membership in the Saudi Arabian upper house.
