Pacifier tree
A pacifier tree is used for simpler pacifier -Entwöhnung an infant . It can be both a real tree in the wild as well as a symbolic replica that is mostly in closed rooms.
Idea and origin
The idea of the pacifier tree originally came from Denmark . The oldest known pacifier tree has been on the Danish island of Thurø since the 1920s . Small children can hang up their pacifiers on designated trees in public parks and amusement parks (including the Tivoli Park in Copenhagen ) to make it easier to remove them. In addition to numerous trees on private land, in August 2005 the city of Münster released an American red oak at the Coerdeplatz playground for “first pacification”. So far there are only a few cities in Germany that have designated trees in their parks according to this Danish custom . In some clinics, such as in Bremen , Frankfurt am Main , Karlsruhe or Dresden, as well as in kindergartens or dental practices , (replicated) trees are increasingly being set up.
If possible, children up to the age of 24 months should be weaned from the pacifier, as continued sucking can lead to misalignments of teeth , jaws and tongue, as well as the resulting speech defects, and breathing through the mouth increases the risk of caries and colds.
The idea is that the child combines the otherwise rather problematic separation from the pacifier with a positive experience, as they can visit the pacifier tree at any time and in this way also be introduced to nature. It sees that other children have also given their pacifiers. The farewell is often accompanied by regular children's parties; the organizers provide lifting platforms for hanging up the pacifier , with which the child can hang his pacifier on a branch. Afterwards they usually receive a small gift or a certificate.

Pacifier fairy
Occasionally there is a coupling of the pacifier tree with a pacifier fairy, which is played by an actress at the festive events. Usually, the pacifier fairy - in Germany as a more traditional weaning variant - is a fictional figure who swaps the child's pacifier for a gift without being noticed. In both variants, the tree and the pacifier fairy, great importance is attached to the child's willingness to submit. Since children often want larger or more expensive toys, the fulfillment of these wishes is a special incentive to voluntarily exchange the pacifier with the pacifier fairy.
