Selchow ( Želchow in Lower Sorbian ) is a district of Storkow (Mark) in the Oder-Spree district . The village, which was incorporated in 2003, was first mentioned in documents in 1321 and has around 260 inhabitants.

Geography and natural space

The Selchow district extends in the Dahme-Heideseen nature park on the western shores of the Großer Wochowsee and Großer Selchower See and on the north bank of the Schweriner See . The three lakes are part of the Groß Schauener chain of lakes comprising six lakes , the water areas of which, partly with the adjacent bank areas, belong entirely to the Bugk district of Storkow . The protected area around the chain of lakes was acquired in 2001 by the Heinz Sielmann Foundation . In Sielmann's Groß Schauener Seen natural landscape , the foundation is dedicated to preserving the lakes and the habitat of various animal species such as ospreys , otters and bats . The “Selchow observation tower” near the Großer Wochowsee offers an overview of the adjacent nature reserve . The ten-meter-high wooden observation and bird observation tower was built in 1993 with funds from the Brandenburg Ministry of the Environment and acquired by the Sielmann Foundation in 2005 along with the adjacent wet meadow . 2009 was the foundation, supported by funds from the State of Brandenburg from the concession fee Lotto , renovate the tower and equipped with a roof. The tower forms the end point of a nature adventure trail that begins at the Köllnitz fishery . In the southwest, the Selchow district includes part of the Linowsee-Dutzendsee nature reserve .

The Angerdorf itself is around 1000 meters inland on the K 6746 district road , which branches off the B 246 at the Köllnitz fishery, a residential area in the Groß Schauen district of Storkow , and leads via Selchow to Schwerin and ends there.

history

The name of the place, first mentioned in 1321 as Selco , derives from the village of Selich or Schelich , possibly the name of the Slavic founder. The lake of the same name was recorded as early as 1316-1319 with the entry in stagno Selcowe in a document, which is contained in the regest of the Margraves of Brandenburg from Ascanian house edited by Hermann Krabbo and Georg Winter and reissued in 1955 . In the document Inventory a deed dated November 3, 1444 is listed, after a gasoline Briescht (?) To Briest pledged the villages Selchow, Kehrig and Bugk for 69 groschen. At that time he was a vassal of Friedrich v. Bieberstein.

On October 26, 2003 Selchow was incorporated into Storkow (Mark) .

buildings

Village church from 1866

The monuments of the Storkow region include the Selchower village church and the rectory opposite. The long dilapidated Selchow Castle or country house, which has been restored since 2013, is also a listed building . It was built in 1913 in the neo-baroque style. The former school, which, like the church, the historic also worth seeing firehouse and the war memorial on the Anger stands. 100-year-old linden and chestnut trees surround the buildings.

church

After the old Selchow church was destroyed by fire on October 3, 1860, the new church building was built in neo-Romanesque form in 1865–1866 according to plans by Friedrich August Stüler and inaugurated on October 3, 1866. The patronage of the brick building goes back to the Löschebrand landowners. The Star of David in the window of the lodge was added later by the Paul Mankiewitz family . The banker bought the manor in 1901 and had the Selchow Castle / Landhaus Selchow built in 1913. The church has been restored and refurbished several times; At the end of the 1990s, an extensive interior renovation took place. The triptych on the wall, which was originally intended for the altar, comes from the graphic artist and painter Renate Niethammer .

The community is part of the Evangelical Church Community Storkower Land in the parish of Fürstenwalde-Strausberg of the Evangelical Church Berlin-Brandenburg-Silesian Upper Lusatia (EKBO).

Selchow country house

Landhaus Selchow 2013 during the renovation

The manor house / manor house of the former Selchow manor is registered under the name "Landhaus Selchow" in the list of monuments of the state of Brandenburg; in recent times (as of 2013) it is increasingly referred to as "Schloss Selchow". The country house was built in 1913 by the architect Alfred Breslauer for the banker Paul Mankiewitz . The neo-baroque plastered building with a three-axis central projection is located under a mansard hipped roof in a two- hectare garden. After Paul Mankiewitz died on his Selchow estate in 1924, the house passed to his sons. During the Nazi era, the Jewish Mankiewitz family was forced to sell the estate and emigrated to Argentina and Great Britain. In the GDR era it first housed an LPG , then the consumer , then a bank and finally the children's holiday camp of the Eisenhüttenstadt meat combine .

The house had been empty since 1991 and was most recently dilapidated. In 2012 it was acquired by Christoph Kamps, who runs an agency for brand communication in Berlin and New York, and by his wife Susanne Groß, actress at the Mecklenburg State Theater in Schwerin . Since 2013, the couple has had the facility renovated and restored with their own and EU funds under the name “Schloss Selchow”. The new owners want to make the house accessible to the public as a cultural and event location. For example, bicycle groups, yoga courses and workshops are being considered. The investment is not aimed at making a profit, rather the owners, according to their own statements, want to bring a piece of history back to life and bring nature closer to people who are concerned with nature and sustainability.

Infrastructure and village life

In 2012, the Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development (HNEE) carried out a village survey in the core town of Storkow and in ten of the fourteen Storkow districts (all of the surrounding villages), including Selchow. Although the collected data […] are neither representative of the total population nor fully meet the standards of empirical social research , they nevertheless provide facts and information on the infrastructure and village life. In the study, the authors describe the village image as follows:

“In the village there is a small green area with a wooden pavilion and seating. In addition, almost every house has its own kitchen and / or ornamental garden and the associated shed. The village has an anger village square with a pump well, wooden benches and tables. There is also a war memorial on the old oak tree and a display case for notices and news for the residents. There is a bus stop on the country road, in addition to the unpaved roads there are several smaller village streets and cobblestone streets. Some private houses are still under construction, some are empty. New buyers are difficult to find because of the high costs in terms of renovation work. "

Local government, facilities and mobility

Selchow's interests in the city of Storkow are represented by a mayor and a local advisory council (deputy mayor). The incorporation to Storkow in 2003 and the associated dependency see the Selchower - like the residents of most of the other districts - rather critically and experience it as a restriction of their ability to act. However, they attest to their mayor and advisory board that they are very committed to the concerns of the villagers and feel very well represented.

Since Selchow does not have a municipal parish hall, events mostly take place in the premises of the Selchow volunteer fire brigade or in the restaurant "Zur Grau Wildgans", the only inn in the village. There are two sports fields - one public and one privately run - but no sports club and, apart from the fire brigade, no other clubs or schools. The few young people in the aging village - the majority of the residents are over 50 years old - complain about the lack of meeting places and cultural offers. The former small shop had to give up for economic reasons. To the public transport Selchow through the line 407 of the bus Oder-Spree  connected (BOS) of Storkow. Since the bus does not run at all on the weekend and only runs seven times on weekdays (as of 2013), older Selchowers and villagers in particular who do not have a car see their spatial mobility as being considerably restricted. Due to the lack of shopping opportunities, necessary visits to the doctor and for the school children, the infrequent travel times are perceived as very problematic. Better service with public transport services and a village shop , which is also always a social meeting point, is therefore one of the top priorities on the residents' wish list, alongside a community center.

Economy, nature park tourism and satisfaction with housing

According to the results of the HNE Eberswalde, Selchow is with 91% the Storkow district with the highest employment rate ; Kummersdorf has the lowest rate at 32% . There are relatively many independent companies and businesses in the village. These include a GmbH for window technology, a heating, plumbing and ventilation company, a small animal trade with a feed exchange, the farm shop of a beekeeping , a hunt, the restaurant and a music school. The rest of the workforce are predominantly commuters and mostly work in the city of Storkow or in Fürstenwalde and travel around half an hour to their workplaces. For the few young people, however, a lack of professional prospects makes it almost impossible to stay in the village, even if some have the desire to do so. As part of the nature park tourism, the landscape mainly attracts bicycle tourists to Selchow, who, due to the lack of suitable accommodation, only briefly visit the village green, visit the observation tower on the lake or take a break in the restaurant, which is open to bicycle tourists. Statements that tourists only stop to ask for directions or to photograph themselves in front of the place-name sign came from Selchow, Kehrigk , Görsdorf and Philadelphia. With the renovation of the country house, the Selchower hope to create a tourist attraction and improve the job offer in the village.

Despite the few public facilities and restricted mobility, the Selchower surveyed are extremely satisfied with their homes. The reasons given were in particular the quiet location and the nature-protected, attractive landscape with its numerous bathing areas, which are used by all generations. For some residents of Selchow, as well as those of Kummersdorf and Kehrigk, the aspect of living where others go on vacation was a reason for choosing where to live.

Neighborhood help and civic engagement

Further factors for the Selchower's well-being with their living situation are the well-functioning neighborhood help and the good communicative exchange within the village community, which the residents see as a particular strength of their place.

Village green with a jointly renovated sidewalk

“The citizens attach great importance to their annual events. These include, for example, the Easter bonfire , the village festival, but also the weekly meetings, such as rummy and retirement afternoons or back school. In addition to the voluntary fire brigade, music school lessons and judo training are offered for children and young people. Since Selchow does not have a parish hall, many of the events take place in the premises of the voluntary fire brigade or in the inn. A popular leisure meeting point is the sports field with a small lounge and rustic seating area, on which the children and young people can play football, table tennis or volleyball. Young families hold a casual volleyball tournament there at regular intervals. For the very little Selchower there is a playground with a climbing tower, slide, seesaw and modern wooden benches, which is well received by parents. A majority of the citizens are members of the parish and enjoy the events that are offered by the church. "

- HNE Eberswalde: Survey of villages ... Volume 2: Descriptions of districts. 2012, p. 107.

There are also joint planting campaigns or measures such as joint renovation of the sidewalk . On the other hand, the Selchowers were at the bottom of all Storkow districts when asked whether they would get involved in the village. The contradiction between excellent neighborhood help / communication and low level of commitment is likely to be partly due to the lack of or nonexistent structures / organizations. When asked where they are involved in the village, an average of around 35% said they were in clubs . Here too, Selchow came in last with 12% of those surveyed.
