Siegfried "Sigi" Schwab (born August 5, 1940 in Ludwigshafen am Rhein ) is a German guitarist and composer .

Live and act

Even during his guitar and double bass studies at the Musikhochschule Mannheim , Siegfried Schwab was active in various local music scenes, for example in the still young rock scene (together with his student Hans Reffert ) and in the Mannheim-Heidelberg jazz scene (together with bassist Wolfgang Wagner, the Drummer Horst Seidelmann and the pianist and composer Wolfgang Lauth ). In 1965 Schwab was hired as a guitarist by the RIAS Big Band Berlin ; in the same year he began to work as a studio musician, first in Berlin and later throughout Germany. In the course of his twenty-year studio phase, he recorded over 15,000 individual tracks. Schwab also played as a guest in the bands of Erwin Lehn ( SWF ), Kurt Edelhagen ( WDR ) and Peter Herbolzheimer as well as with Klaus Doldinger . Other musical partners in this phase were George Shearing , The Singers Unlimited , Benny Bailey , Art Farmer , Charlie Mariano , Claus Ogerman , Nelson Riddle , Eddie Gomez , Michael Gibbs , Astor Piazzolla and Luiz Bonfá as well as the classical singers Hermann Prey , Bernd Weikl and Felicia Weathers. From Robert Stolz he learned how to properly accompany the Viennese waltz . In order to balance the precision work of the studio musician with more spontaneous artistic activities, from 1969 he increasingly sought contact with musicians such as Wolfgang Dauner and Eberhard Weber , later with the band Embryo , Chris Hinze and Peter Trunk .

In addition, Schwab composed television, film and stage music. His LPs Psychedelic Dance Party and Sexadelic , produced together with Manfred Hübler in Berlin in the late 1960s, served as music for the Jesus-Franco films The Devil Came from Akasava in 1971 , Vampyros Lesbos - heiress of Dracula and she killed in ecstasy . In 1995 the two records were merged on one CD; 1997 found the title "The Lions & The Cucumber" in Quentin Tarantino's film Jackie Brown use; In 2006 the majority of the tracks were re-released on Vampyros Lesbos - Sexadelic Dance Party . Schwab wrote original music for the feature film Ein Wintermärchen (1971), the television film Das Fräulein von Scuderi (1976), the crime scene The Girl at the Piano (1977) and the television film Tears in Cocoa (1982), for the ZDF Christmas series about the ballet dancer Anna (1987), Anna - Der Film (1988) for its cinema sequel and two other ZDF Christmas series: Laura and Luis (1989) and Clara (1993). Composed in 1987 and sung by Guillermo Marchena , My Love Is a Tango from the television series Anna became a number one hit ; Schwab set up his own recording studio from the royalties, which enabled him to free himself from any production constraints in the industry. The musician also became known through two one-hour ZDF portraits with live contributions in a duo with Chris Hinze, Peter Horton, Marcio Montarroyos, in a quartet with Charly Mariano, Eberhard Weber and John Marshall as well as two episodes of the SF series Jazz-In with Márcio Montarroyos (trumpet / flugelhorn), Mark Egan (bass), Freddie Santiago (percussion) and Guillermo Marchena (vocals and percussion). The NDR produced six improvisation workshops with him, the BR six blues workshops.

From 1980 concerts with the Diabelli Trio ( Wiener Klassik ), the Duo Guitarissimo (with guitarist Peter Horton ) and with the Percussion Academia (Guillermo Marchena and Freddie Santiago) followed. After Marchena's early death, Sigi Schwab formed the Percussion Project together with Andreas Keller and Ramesh Shotham ; More recently, Schwab and Shotham have been conducting an intercultural dialogue in the duo Mandala . Schwab is currently working with numerous well-known actors in literary-musical live acts, including Cornelia Froboess , Nicole Heesters , Suzanne von Borsody , Johanna von Koczian , Michaela May , Thekla Carola Wied , Charles Brauer , Christian Wolff , Ernst Stankowski , Werner Schneyder , Christian Quadflieg , Mario Freivogel , Peter Fricke and Jochen Striebeck . Sigi Schwab and Peter Horton have been working together with drummer Andreas Keller and bassist Thomas Müller under the band name Guitarissimo XL since 2011. Since 2015 he has been playing in the formation Camerata Bavarese with Klaus Hampl on the clarinet and a rhythm section. The new formation uses models of harmony from the Renaissance and Baroque periods as the basis for their improvisations.

Prizes and awards

In 1987 Sigi Schwab was the first European to receive the Ovation Award - this award had previously gone to Larry Coryell and Al Di Meola . In 2000 he was awarded the Palatinate Column by the city of Ludwigshafen am Rhein, and in 2003 by the State of Rhineland-Palatinate with the Peter Cornelius plaque . In 2008 he received the culture award of the Bavarian State Foundation . In 2013 he was also awarded the Bavarian Culture Prize.
