information Fantasy MMORPG from South Korea . The game is primarily based on the history of the Silk Road from China to Europe .

Silkroad Online (OT: Kor .: 실크 로드 온라인, English " Silk Road "; usually abbreviated to SRO ) is a Korean mass multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG). Silkroad Online can be used free of charge and downloaded from the manufacturer's website (“Free to Play”). The game is financed through a so-called item mall . Here, players can buy items for real money, which simplify the course of the game and which cannot be found in the game.

The game client is in English, among other things, so that it is also of interest to European players. In Germany, too, a large number of Silkroad players with a large number of fansites have already been found.

The game principle

Silkroad Online takes place in a virtual world that is based on the historic Silk Road. First you begin to train and develop your character. This is done via quests or simply fighting monsters. The development is indicated by levels that range from 1 to 140 in the international version. There are also so-called talent points (skill points) with the help of which you can learn and improve various skills (e.g. how to use weapons or magic).

From level 20, players can learn a trade. There is a choice between dealers and thieves. Merchants seek to make gold by moving goods between cities, while thieves' primary job is to attack and rob merchants.

Conceived as an online game, the main attraction of Silkroad Online lies in the interaction with other players from all over the world. These can join together in groups and thus fight individual quests together or also join together in guilds in order to be effective together.

Unique

A special feature of Silkroad Online are the so-called uniques . These are particularly strong, unique monsters that appear at random points in the game world at regular intervals. If a player kills one of these uniques, his name will be displayed to the entire server.

Battle arena

The Battle Arena is a special event and takes place several times a day. Two teams of players from level 20 fight each other in the battle arena and collect points for 20 minutes. As a reward for participating in the Battle Arena , players receive coins that they can exchange for special equipment.

Capture the flag

Capture the Flag is a game mode found in many computer games. This event also takes place several times a day in Silkroad; Two teams of players fight over a flag. The team that has the flag when the time runs out wins the game. As a reward for participating, there are trophies that can be exchanged for rewards.

The game world

Due to the topic of the Silk Road, the developers were offered a variety of possibilities to design the huge game world. These range from large fields, forests and meadows, river landscapes and canyons to desert regions and snow-covered mountain landscapes. Depending on the region, the cities are designed in an Asian, Indian or European style and are connected by wide streets. Several dungeons offer interesting alternatives to the outside world for higher players.

Changing times of day and night, as well as rain and storms through to snowfall in the ice regions, also ensure a more realistic atmosphere.

The game world is regularly expanded by updates that add new regions, cities and monsters / opponents, see versions .

The world is not completely connected, but individual areas are separated from one another by natural obstacles such as mountain ranges, seas, rivers or canyons. These obstacles can only be crossed at certain points, where you leave the old area completely and enter the new area after a short loading time.

Game variants

With every level up you can upgrade your character by allocating “Stat Points” to either strength (“STR”) or intelligence (“INT”). With an ascent, STR and INT automatically increase by one stat point. In addition, the character receives three more Stat Points that can be freely distributed.

The higher the strength, the higher the health and the physical strength (attack and defense) of the character, the higher the intelligence, the higher the magic points and the magic power (like attack, like defense) of the character.

The following types of weapons are available to a Chinese character:

  • Blade - A sword with more physical damage than magical damage.
  • Sword - A sword that does more magical damage than physical damage.
  • Glaive - A glaive with more physical than magical damage.
  • Spear - A spear with more magical damage than physical damage.
  • Bow - A bow with balanced damage values.
  • Shield - A shield with a good block / good defense (shield)

The chosen weapon is the basis for the type (“the build”) of the character. In addition there are the special abilities / attacks ("skills"):

  • Bicheon, for Sword / Blade,
  • Heuksal, for Spear / Glave and
  • Pacheon, for Bow.

Furthermore, a character can learn magical skills, these are divided into the categories:

  • Cold (ice),
  • Fire (fire),
  • Lightning (lightning) and
  • Force (healing)

assigned.

The following arms are available to a European character:

  • Twohand sword - A two-handed sword with only physical damage (two-handed sword)
  • Onehand sword - A one-handed sword with only physical damage (one-handed sword)
  • Dual ax - Two axes with only physical damage (double ax)
  • Crossbow - A crossbow with only physical damage (crossbow)
  • Dagger - Two daggers with only physical damage (dagger)
  • Twohand staff - A two-hand staff with only magical damage (staff, wand)
  • Warlock Rod (also called Dark staff ) - A staff with only magical damage (Dark Staff)
  • Cleric Rod (also called Light staff ) - A staff with only magic damage (light staff)
  • Harp - A harp with only magical damage (harp)

The chosen weapon is the basis for the type (“the build”) of the character. In addition, there are the special abilities / attacks ("skills"):

  • Melee, for Twohand sword / Onehand sword / Dual ax / Dagger / Crossbow,
  • Caster, for Twohand staff / Warlock Rod,
  • Buff, for Harp / Cleric Rod.

Furthermore, a character can learn physical and magical skills, these are the categories:

  • Warrior (warrior),
  • Rogue ,
  • Wizard (Mage)
  • Warlock (sorcerer)
  • Bard (singer with harp) and
  • Cleric (cleric)

assigned.

The game offers the possibility to open your own sales booths and thus to sell found or no longer needed items to other players or to buy some yourself. The price of the goods can be determined by the players themselves, which gives the game its own economy. This can vary more or less depending on supply and demand. Payment is made in these stalls with the game's own currency, gold, which can be obtained by trading or killing monsters (mobs).

The alchemy system , which was partially introduced at a later date, offers another large field of activity . Weapons, armor and accessories can be upgraded and strengthened with special elixirs and magical stones that can be found in the game. This gives each player the opportunity to create their own individual, high-quality equipment. The chance of successfully upgrading these items depends largely on one's own luck or luck (“luck”) on the item in question. "Luck" can be added to an object using so-called "Attribute Stones"; or you find an object that is already Lucked.

financing

The basic system is free. Joymax is only financed by selling special items in the so-called Item Mall.

Silk & Item Mall

The Item Mall is an additional shopping option in the game. There are a ton of items in the Item Mall that can help players; z. B. Bags with healing or mana potions, quivers with space for 10,000 arrows (instead of the usual 250), etc. Furthermore, you can also purchase items here, e.g. B. to change the look of his stalls or to put on his character distinctive hats. In addition, z. B. the possibility to increase his inventory space by an additional 32 spaces.

Premium ticket

The most important item that can be bought in the Item Mall is the so-called "Premium Ticket". This gives the player more experience, distributes more damage and increases the defense values. In addition, you can enter the server with the first login attempt even at peak times, which makes sense with many servers, since many servers are overcrowded most of the time.

The internal game currency that is used for shopping in the Item Mall is called Silk. In contrast to gold, Silk cannot be found in the game and can only be used for purchases in the Item Mall. The virtual currency is acquired through so-called ePins or online banking. The price for Silk is fixed in relation to the US dollar price.

VIP status

In the first quarter of 2016 Joymax introduced the so-called VIP status. In addition to additional buffs, priority server access is also granted from VIP Silver if the server is full. In order to get this status, the player must buy the virtual currency Premium Silk (Joymax) or C-Coin (JC Planet) with real money and also use these to buy virtual items in the in-game item mall. The status is granted every day at 12 a.m. Korean time and lasts for the remainder of the month and the following month. So if you get VIP status at the end of the month, the current month will continue to be counted. Accordingly, most players buy this status at the beginning of each month. It does not matter whether the virtual currency is bought on one day or on several. From the gold status onwards, players also have access to special items that can only be acquired by players who are VIP Gold or higher. In addition, there is an Auto Skill function for VIP Gold customers that automatically starts skills when a monster is selected. From VIP Platinum this auto skill function is also provided with an auto hunt function. This allows the character to level independently without human intervention. This function can be compared with a bot. However, the integrated function can only level where it was left off. However, she cannot go shopping with the character or run to the level space.

Events

Events serve as a change from normal game play and to bring large, worldwide festivals into the game; Sometimes as a kind of compensation for inspections of the servers or outages in gaming operations. They can be seen as small additions to the game that are removed after a certain period of time, but they do repeat themselves.

  • Christmas event (reindeer, Christmas tree in the center of town and Christmas music)
  • Easter event
  • Thanksgiving event (monster scrolls, gold dragon flags; cannot be found at the moment)
  • Halloween event (Candys from Ghost Sungsungs)
  • HAPPY event
  • Lucky Box Event (Monsterscrolls, Pandora Box, Zerkpots and much more)

During the events, special event boxes can be found on monsters, which can be exchanged at an NPC for partly valuable, but partly completely useless items.

The "Pets"

To support you in the game you can add various “pets” to your character. However, it is only possible to summon one “collecting animal” and one “fighting animal”. Collecting animals run after the player and pick up what they were set for. It can be gold, weapons or raw materials. You also have a time limit of one month. This time can be extended by a month with a watch that can also be purchased in the ItemMall. Fighting animals accompany the player and help him fight. For this they have their own life energy, which is independent of that of the player. If this drops to zero, they die and can be brought back to life with the help of a so-called "grass of life". Pets can be given a name. However, this cannot be changed once it has been given.

For the jobs of the dealer and the thief, pack animals are available to transport goods. These consist of horses and camels of different levels and an ox. In addition, you can buy different horses as mounts in order to move faster through the game world. Here, too, the player has the opportunity to use higher-quality horses at a higher level, which have more life energy and speed.

Versions

A variety of versions of Silkroad Online exist side by side. The original Korean game (abbreviated: kSRO) as well as the international version (iSRO) and a Chinese version (cSRO) are operated by the developer Joymax. There is also the modified version of the game, Silkroad-Rebirth . In addition, the rights for the game were sold to some companies that operate locally limited versions, such as a Russian (rSRO) and a Taiwanese ("Black Rogue").

All of these versions differ in some serious ways. New features are usually first introduced in the Korean version and only after a few months' delay in the other versions. For example, the maximum level that can be achieved differs from version to version. In addition, the playable characters have been censored; In the Korean version, these are partly unclothed without equipment, which has been changed for the international market.

If extremely serious changes take place that affect the game play and introduce new aspects of the game, these are called "legends". In the international Silkroad this started with the playability of the so-called Europeans and has now advanced to “Legend VI”, with which the international version of the game caught up with the Korean version for the first time in terms of top level.

Legend I.

  • A new breed was introduced. In addition to the original Chinese characters, so-called Europeans can now also be played, which, in contrast to the Chinese, who mainly level alone, are designed for party levels (the systematic interaction with other players) through and through.
  • Along with the new race, a multitude of new areas and monsters as well as two new cities were introduced, which are thematically oriented towards European culture.
  • As already mentioned, the party system has been revised and partially adapted to the new breed. In addition, some changes have been made to the job system.
  • A so-called academy system was introduced, with the help of which more experienced players are able to help newcomers and receive rewards for doing so.
  • In addition, several minor changes have been made, but these have less of an impact on the game.

Legend II

  • The so-called Fortress War was introduced. From now on it is possible for guilds to fight for a fortress every two weeks, the conquest of which brings some advantages. With the update only the "Jangan Fortress" was introduced, but over time more and more fortresses that are located near cities and thief camps will be unlocked with further updates.

Legend III

  • The maximum level has been increased from 80 to 90.
  • A new area called Roc Mountain, which houses monsters up to level 90, has been unlocked.
  • Both Chinese and European characters have received new equipment and skills.

Legend III PLUS

  • The second fortress, called the Bandit Fortress, was introduced. The Bandit Fortress is quite a bit smaller than the Jangan Fortress, which bears the designation "large" for large, and is marked as "small" for small.

Legend IV

  • The maximum level has been increased from 90 to 100.
  • A new dungeon, the so-called Tomb of Qin-Shi Emperor, which houses monsters up to level 100, has been activated.
  • Both Chinese and European characters have received new equipment and skills.
  • The Unique Monster System has been partially revised and adapted to the new dungeon.

Legend IV PLUS

  • Several new monsters and unique monsters have been unlocked, including Roc (level 100 only), which at the time of its launch was both the largest and most powerful monsters in the entire game.
  • The Unique Monster System was again partially revised.
  • The armament system has also been revised. For the first time there is armor that can be worn by both Chinese and Europeans.

Legend IV PLUS Hotan Fortress

  • The third fortress, called the Hotan Fortress, was introduced. Like the Jangan Fortress, the Hotan Fortress bears the designation “large” for large.
  • The so-called Magic Pop, a system similar to a lottery, which enables players to exchange tickets obtained through Silk with an extremely low chance of success for prizes, was introduced.

Legend V - "Heroes of Alexandria"

  • Date: March 16, 2010.
  • The update was devoted to Egyptian mythology.
  • The maximum level has been increased from 100 to 110.
  • A variety of new areas have been added , including the city of Alexandria .
  • Both Chinese and European characters have received new equipment and skills.
  • Two new dungeons instanced for the first time were introduced ("Jobtemple")
  • There are various new uniques.

Legend VI

  • Date: November 30, 2010.
  • The Forgotten World instance has been added.
  • Numerous new areas have been added.
  • A consignment system (auction house) was added.

Legend VII - "Rise of the Thief-Hunter"

  • Date: March 15, 2011.
  • The job system has been completely revised.

Legend VIII - "Mysterious Temple of Jupiter"

  • Date: August 2, 2011.
  • The update is dedicated to Greek mythology.
  • The maximum level has been increased from 110 to 120.
  • Both Chinese and European characters have been given additional equipment and skills.
  • The new area Mirror Dimension including the instance Jupitertemple and many new opponents was introduced.

Problems

Bots

Estimates assume that a large part of the characters on the servers are controlled by bots (illegal programs for automation) in order to reach a higher level more quickly or to get gold to sell. In addition, there are so-called TownSpammers in every city, who send messages at regular intervals to point out bots or gold providers (play gold for real money), so that normal chatting in cities is almost impossible. The heavy load on the servers by the bots means that it is sometimes impossible for players without premium tickets to connect to the servers. Furthermore, the sale of gold by the companies in the game itself causes horrific inflation.

In January 2010 the new HackShield (Anti-Bot-System) was introduced, which made the so-called Clientless Bots useless for the time being. Since the end of August 2010, another measure has been taken to eliminate bots: So-called “Statues of Justice” were placed at distinctive points in the game world that changed randomly at certain time intervals. These "Statues of Justice" are monsters that are on level 140 and attack every player (or bot) who enters a certain radius around the "Statue of Justice". The function of these monsters is to attack bots that are not intelligent enough to avoid the attack radius. Due to the high damage, one hit is enough to knock out the player, so that he loses experience points and has to start again in town. Furthermore, the connection to the server is interrupted after a hit. In addition, since April 2011, all players are only allowed to log in to five accounts. This is another measure by Joymax to combat overcrowding of the servers by bots.

Social interaction

The massive presence of the bots in the game also prevents social interaction in the form of the player chat, because the bots do not respond to the chat invitations and inquiries. Help from fellow players is only rarely expected (namely when the player gets into another real player). Since all other players quickly experience this as well, attempts to make contact are completely avoided. For this reason, among other things, Silkroad has been decried as cold-hearted and soulless in the MMORPG community.

Server development

At peak times, Silkroad Online had over 40 servers:

The Malazgirt server was aimed primarily at Turkish-speaking players. If the response is positive, additional servers should be made available for other strongly represented nationalities.

In the summer of 2012, several old servers were merged under a new name due to the falling number of players:

In August 2016, a cooperation between Joymax and the Korean publisher JC Planet was announced. Since then, JC Planet has opened new Silkroad servers over and over again in the following years. These can also be accessed via the normal Silkroad Online Client of the international version. Users who log in with a JC-Planet account receive 100,000 Skill Points and Seal of Sun + 5 weapons from Degree 1 to Degree 9. The biggest difference to Joymax's Silkroad servers is the fatigue system. This is based on the EXP limit of SRO-R, whereby the player only gets 100% EXP for 5 hours (blue bar). Then the player gets 50% EXP (orange bar) for 3 hours before the connection to the server is disconnected. The Fatigue Bar can be reset by simply logging out and logging in again before the blue bar has expired. It is not known whether this is a bug or a deliberately implemented function. On Palmyra it is possible to completely deactivate the fatigue system by purchasing VIP Silver.

Silkroad-R

In December 2011, Joymax released an alternative, modified version of the game called Silkroad-Rebirth parallel to Silkroad Online . In the years that followed, Joymax adopted almost all changes from Silkroad-R for the classic version. In 2018 Joymax integrated Palmyra, the last remaining SRO-R server, into the client of the classic Silkroad version. Which makes it necessary to use two clients for both games.

Silkroad 2 (Legend of Silkroad)

Silkroad 2 is being developed by a Chinese developer company. The company is the former publisher of the Chinese version of Silkroad Online or Silkroad-R. The release of this version is scheduled for February 2014. At the beginning of February 2014 it was announced that the South Korean publisher JC Planet will be marketing the game on the international market. At the same time, the name was announced with which the game will be marketed on the international market. This is called "Legend of Silkroad". The international beta also started on February 26th, 2014. Through a window that appears for a short time when starting the P2P downloader, a direct connection between Legend of Silkroad and Joymax, the developer of Silkroad Online, could be established for the first time. because the window also contained the official logo in addition to a Joymax lettering. This fact underpins the suspicions of many Silkroad players who have suspected for a long time that Joymax also developed Legend of Silkroad, but sold the game and the rights for reasons that were not yet clear. Probably the most likely reason is a reorientation of the company. In the spring of 2013, the Russian version of Silkroad was discontinued online on the grounds that Joymax no longer wants to invest any more work in the Russian version, as they want to concentrate on the market of mobile games in the future.

At the end of 2014, the international and initially also the Chinese version was discontinued. CIMO resumed the publication of the Chinese version a few months later. In the following months, however, the service was discontinued again.

Silkroad Online Mobile Game (SRO Mobile)

At the end of 2016 it was announced that Joymax had sold the rights for the mobile implementation to the Chinese developer studio U1 Game Digital. In November 2018, the official website and the official Facebook page of the mobile branch went online. However, the game did not gain the attention of the gaming community until the beginning of 2019 when the mobile version was referred to in various game forums. In the following years, U1 Game began to publish more and more material, in the form of videos and images, on their Facebook website. In addition, the start of a first, two-week, closed beta for February 2019 has been determined. For the time being, only Android owners from Turkey or Egypt were given access to the game.

When implementing the game, the developers partly used the content of the PC version. The same cities and regions appear in the mobile version, albeit with a heavily modified design. But the classic soundtrack and the job system also got their place in the game. While the gameplay has been clearly optimized for operation with the smartphone and the entire skill tree has been rebuilt, there are also allusions to the PC version in these areas. As with the PC version, SRO Mobile will initially only contain the Chinese race. As with numerous other mobile games, SRO Mobile also uses an auto play feature. This is a kind of bot that relieves or simplifies the game for the player in numerous situations.

April 17th, 2019 was selected as the official release date of the European servers. The supported platforms are Android and iOS. Asian and Chinese servers are also planned.
