Slane (concert)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Slane Concert (usually abbreviated to Slane ) is a concert that takes place every year in Slane Castle near the Irish town of Slane of the same name .

It is usually held on a Saturday in August and lasts from noon to 10 p.m. The area of Slane Castle forms a natural amphitheater , the natural stage offers space for around 80,000 concert-goers annually. 2001 and 2013 were the only years so far in which the concert was held twice, with U2 performing as the main group at both concerts in 2001 . In 2001, 2003 and 2005 the events sold out immediately, which was not the case in 2002 and 2004. In 2005 the concert had to be canceled after Eminem , who was supposed to appear as the main act, canceled his participation.

Special occurrences

In the run-up to the 2004 concert, there were protests from the local population because the concert was supposed to take place on a Sunday. The majority Roman Catholic population had concerns that they would be disturbed because of the expected rush of people while celebrating Holy Mass. The problem was solved by specifying a later concert start and significantly reducing the lineup.

Jon Bon Jovi flew to Ireland and remarked at a press conference at Slane Castle: "This was always the goal, to play Slane." The second concert for 2013 took place on August 17th.
