Australia took part in the 2008 Summer Paralympics in Beijing , China , with 168 athletes. This means that only five countries sent more athletes to the Paralympics than Australia. The flag bearer at the opening ceremony was the athlete Russell Short. The Australian team's most successful athlete was swimmer Matthew Cowdrey with five gold and three silver medals. In the nation ranking they finished 5th with 23 gold medals, and even fourth with a total of 79 medals won.
