action

Achim and Tobi have been best friends since childhood. For this reason they are both members of the rowing club in their Bavarian hometown Starnberg (short: RSC). As the two of them are late for a running training session in the forest and are late for rowing training, coach Hansi orders them to clean the boathouse as a punishment. While Achim lets Tobi do most of the work because he is to blame for the delay, Tobi thinks about another prank and pours a bucket full of mopping water over his friend's head. After the friends have measured their strength a little, they decide to masturbate together .

In the evening there is an anniversary celebration of the rowing club, at which, among others, the father of Georg (nickname "Schorsch"), a regionally known dealer of agricultural machinery , donates new tracksuits and sports bags to the club. Meanwhile, Tobi and Achim go to the bowling alley in the basement to smoke a joint . They talk about their future plans. Tobi is about to admit to Achim that he is in love with him. However, he lacks the courage to do so. Instead, he tells Achim, embarrassed, that he had already slept with Anke, one of the female members of the rowing club and admirer of Tobi. When Achim later dances with Anke with his girlfriend Sandra and Tobi, Tobi maintains close physical contact with Anke, but only has eyes for Achim the whole time.

The next day the team sets off for the training camp in the Bergisches Land . There is great anticipation because a women's team from Berlin is also expected. Ferdl uses the time after setting up his tent to secretly observe some members of the women's team. However, he is caught and clamps his foreskin in the zipper of his pants. He is then brought back to the camp by members of the other RC Queerschlag competition team . In a conversation with the "Queerschlägern" the disappointed RSC'ler learn that the Berlin women's team is canceled due to illness and Queerschlag has slipped up because of it. When asked about the alleged misprint on the team t-shirts , Malte explains that “queer” in English means “strange” - or “ gay ”, which provokes very mixed reactions from RSC members. While Tobi, Achim and the girls hardly have a problem with that, the conservative Georg in particular is appalled by the presence of an entire team made up of only gays.

In the next few days it is inevitable that the RSC'ler and the queer thugs get to do with each other several times. Meanwhile, the friendship between Achim and Tobi is put to a severe test after Achim learns that Tobi lied to him about his sexual experiences with Anke. As they both swim in the lake, the two of them have a first discussion. A short time later they are both lying on the jetty in the sun and Tobi is overwhelmed by his feelings. He kisses the dozing Achim, who wakes up and is completely shocked. Achim runs away, which the queer thugs also notice from a distance. Tobi jumps back into the water and then spends the afternoon with the queer thugs at the lake. After falling asleep in the sun, he got a huge sunburn , and Leo, a rather reluctant member of the RC Queerschlag until then, rubs cream on his back. Out of this situation, the two of them have sexual intercourse - for Tobi for the first time.

Confused, he then wanders along the shore of the lake, where he meets Anke, who had already chosen a quiet spot in the reeds to experience her first time with Tobi. But Tobi, who is still completely confused, blocks and finally confesses his love for Achim. Meanwhile, the brisk Malte continues to try to get Georg around, to whom he has previously shown that he is actually heterosexual. When Malte finally compels Georg to kiss and he flees into the forest in shock, he doesn't show up for dinner with the RC Queerschlag either, so that Hansi finally sends the two teams to look for him. Georg appears again, but now Achim and Sandra have disappeared. The team members correctly suspect that the two just want to be alone. But Tobi insists, more out of jealousy than real worry, not to leave them behind. So there is a hint of a crush Tobi for Achim, which initially results in a dispute and finally a fight between the two rowing teams. When Tobi pushes Leo, he falls to the ground and sprains his arm.

Back in the camp, the wind developed into a summer storm in the course of the evening. Lightning struck a tree and destroyed one of the boats. Coach Hansi becomes aware of the danger for his team and he lets everyone go to a nearby youth hostel for the night. When Tobi wants to move into a room with Achim, Achim puts him in front of the door, because on the one hand he wants to be alone with Sandra and on the other hand he doesn't want Tobi, who is now clearly jealous, near him. Then Tobi spends the night with Leo in a room. Leo encourages Tobi to stand by his homosexuality. At breakfast the next morning, Tobi flees to the front and comes out to his team. With his courageous step, the situation relaxed noticeably, as the members of the RSC Tobis can now understand the behavior so far.

But for the upcoming competition, which marks the end of the training camp, two more problems arise: Due to Leo's injury, the queer thugs are missing a rower and the RSC only has one boat available. Hansi decides that the boys' team of the RSC should compete and provide a member to replace Leo: Schorsch - who until then had repeatedly attracted attention through anti-gay statements. Anke can row for him in the boy's boat. At the end of the race that the queer thugs win, Achim and Tobi can finally settle their argument.

production

The shooting took place in summer 2003, mainly at the Bevertalsperre in the Bergisches Land. According to the producer, this location was chosen because it was isolated and because it received film funding from the NRW funding agency . The body of water, which looks like a single lake in the film, was cut from four different lakes. The scenes set in Bavaria were filmed at Lake Starnberg . The total cost of the film project was around 2.9 million euros, although financing the film turned out to be difficult over a long period of time due to the fact that the subject was viewed as less commercial. Ultimately, the Bavarian and North Rhine-Westphalia film funds each contributed 500,000 euros to the project.

Marco Kreuzpainter, the 26-year-old director at the time of shooting, also processed his own experiences of his coming out in the film. He tried to create the film through an emotional narrative style that was broadly effective for a larger audience on the one hand and deeply and densely told on the other. Many scenes rely in particular on metaphors in nature to express the characters' feelings (most obviously the eponymous "summer storm"), while the camera work uses many medium long shots with which the movements of the characters are captured with their full bodies.

Before shooting started, the young actors completed rowing training three times a week for eight weeks. It was important to Kreuzpainter that the actors in the smaller supporting roles were all busy and in good shape. The main role was played by Robert Stadlober , who four years earlier had his breakthrough with the film Crazy , as well as Sommersturm, a production by Jakob Claussen and Thomas Wöbke . Since the actress Alicja Bachleda-Curuś, who came from Poland, could not speak German without an accent, her scenes were dubbed by Laura Maire , who is therefore mentioned in the credits as Anke's dubbing voice.

music

The film music was released on CD as the soundtrack for the film. It comes mainly from the Swiss composer Niki Reiser , but also contains a few other titles. Among others, Frankie Goes to Hollywood's ballad The Power of Love and Nova Internationals The Summer We Had can be heard. The opening sequence is highlighted with Blonde on Blonde by Nada Surf . Peter Wolfe and Pete Doherty contributed the title For Lovers . The US project VAST also delivered the title Flames . Other titles come from Hidden Cameras and Hanno Koffler's band Kerosin . In addition, Go West can be heard in the version by Nova International , because (according to the audio commentary on the Summer Storm DVD) the license fees for the version of the Pet Shop Boys would have been too high.

In the credits, "Willkommen" is played by Rosenstolz . Conversely, scenes from the summer storm can be seen in the Rosenstolz group's music video for “Welcome” .

reception

At the end of 2004 , Sommersturm had a total of 275,295 viewers in German cinemas . The film was also marketed internationally, so it ran under the title Summer Storm in the USA in 2006, and DVD editions of the film were released worldwide. It grossed over two million US dollars at box offices worldwide. The reviews were largely positive, both in Germany and abroad. The film premiered on German television on August 2, 2008 at 8:15 pm on ProSieben.

The Süddeutsche Zeitung wrote:

“There are these films, everything just fits. The actors, the narrative tone, the music, the humor, the dramaturgy. Sommersturm, awarded the Audience Award at the Munich Film Festival in early July, is such a film. An open-hearted piece of young cinema to fall in love with. The images of Tobi and Leo (Marlon Kittel) physically experiencing each other on the jetty, for example, pairing same-sex lust and curiosity, are courageous and clear at the same time - and their intensity is probably unique in German film. "

The lexicon of international film said:

“A German coming-out story that deals with the subject of homosexuality with sovereign charm and winning ease. Despite some dramaturgical uncertainties and occasional recourse to banal puns, the film is convincing and entertaining thanks to its young actors and the reliably staged story. "

Critic.de wrote:

“With all the problems that coming out can involve, the film leaves a pleasant feeling. Which group do I belong to? Which one do I want to belong to? How will my friends deal with it? The mere claim to bring this topic "into the middle of society" [...] is praiseworthy - especially when you consider that in Germany, not only in youth circles, "gay" is often used as an insult or filler word.
