The State Highway 32 (Wisconsin) (also State Trunk Highway 32 , Highway 32 , STH 32 or WIS 32 ) is running from south to north State Road through the eastern US -amerikanischen state of Wisconsin . It runs from the Illinois border via Milwaukee along the east coast of Lake Michigan until it turns northwest at Green Bay inland and reaches the Michigan border .

course

The WIS 32 begins on the Illinois border. It develops from the northern continuation of the Illinois State Route 137 through Kenosha County , which - although already part of Wisconsin - still belongs to the Chicago metropolitan area. As far as Kenosha , coming from the west and reaching their eastern end point, the highways WIS 165 , WIS 50 and WIS 158 flow one after the other .

To the north of Kenosha, the WIS 32 now runs directly along the shores of Lake Michigan and crosses the border with Racine County , which is already part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. The WIS 11 and WIS 20 flow into Racine and the road now runs a few kilometers west of Lake Michigan. After passing through the regional airport John H. Batten Airport in Racine, the WIS 31 flows in from the south-west.

The WIS 100 already flows into Milwaukee County from the west . With the city of Oak Creek , the highway approaches the city of Milwaukee , Wisconsin's largest city. The course of the road now leads again close to Lake Michegan. A few kilometers west of the road is Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport, Milwaukee's largest airport in Wisconsin. After crossing under the four-lane WIS 794 , the street leads through the center of Milwaukee as Kinnickinnic Anenue and 1st Street . The WIS 59 joins here from the west . After the bridge over the Milwaukee River , the WIS 32 crosses under Interstate 794 , the so-called East-West Freeway , which becomes the Lake Freeway leading to the south after turning at the lakeshore . The WIS 32 now follows the course of the lake shore through the northeast of the city and leaves it to the north. WIS 190 flows into Shorewood until the road bends west in Bayside and reaches Interstate 43 , which runs parallel to it .

Now the WIS 32 runs north along with the interstate and reaches Ozaukee County . At the eastern end point of WIS 167 the WIS 57 joins and from here also runs congruently with the interstate to the north. In Grafton , WIS 60 will be the eastern end point until WIS 57 leaves the joint route to the north at Port Washington . The WIS 32 also leaves the interstate and runs through the center of Port Washington, where the WIS 33 joins. Behind the city, Highway 32 is again congruent with I 43.

Upon entering Sheboygan County , the route leaves the Milwaukee metropolitan area. In Cedar Grove , the WIS 32 finally leaves the I 43 and from now on runs in a northerly direction. Sheboygan Falls cross WIS 28 and WIS 23 . The road passes Sheboygan County Memorial Airport about 2 km away and turns northwest at Howards Grove after meeting WIS 42 .

At the border with Manitowoc County , the highway meets WIS 57 again to form the main street of Kiel . WIS 67, which runs in a north-south direction, crosses there .

After both highways continue in a northwesterly direction and only touch the most south-western corner of Manitowoc County, the road enters Calumet County . After New Holstein , where the New Holstein Municipal Airport is a small airfield, both highways reach the administrative center of Chilton . US Highway 151 crosses here . In Hilbert , WIS 114 flows at its eastern end point until Forest Junction is reached with the intersection of US Highway 10 , the last place in Calumet County.

After entering the Brown County crosses in Greenleaf of WIS 96 . In Green Bay's suburb of De Pere , the WIS 32 separates from the WIS 57 and crosses the Fox River . In Ashwaubenon , WIS 32 passes under WIS 172, which has been expanded to four lanes to form the southern bypass of Green Bay . In the center of Green Bay, the WIS 32 meets the WIS 29 shortly after the intersection with the WIS 54 and leads with it out of the city on a congruent route in a northeastern direction. South of Pulaski , WIS 32 leaves the joint route with WIS 29 to the north and leads out of the county.

After the Passage of Pulaski, the WIS 32 forms the boundary of Oconto County and Shawano County until the road southeast of Gillett completely enters Oconto County. In Gilett the WIS 22 crosses offset and the road now leads in several right-angled curves in a north-westerly direction to the entry into the Nicolet National Forest and the confluence of the WIS 64 coming from the east . After a common course, the WIS 64 turns west, while the WIS 32 continues in a north-northwest direction and leaves the county.

After entering Forest County the WIS 52 joins Wabeno from the west . Further north, WIS 32 meets US Highway 8 coming from the north and turns west with it. In Crandon the WIS 55 crosses , with which the WIS 32 turns north from US 8 to the north. In Argonne , the WIS 32 leaves the joint route in a north-westerly direction and leads out of Forest County.

In an area rich in forests and lakes, the WIS 32 enters Oneida County . In Three Lakes , the highway meets US Highway 45 and runs northwards together with it.

A few kilometers after that, the highway enters Vilas County . Both highways meet WIS 17 and WIS 70 in the Eagle River administrative center . With the Eagle River Union Airport there is a small airfield here. In Land O 'Lakes , 30 km to the north, there is another small airfield, Kings Land O' Lakes Airport . In Land O'Lakes, on the Michigan border , is the northern end of WIS 32, while US 45 continues north while maintaining its designation.

history

The highway opened in 1918 as the 32nd Division Memorial Highway . The name was given in honor of the 32nd Infantry Division formed in 1917 , which was formed from units of the Army National Guard from Wisconsin and Michigan. The unit was called the Red Arrow Division and the red arrow became its symbol. For this reason it can still be seen on highway signs today.
