Sauter (spelling variant: Sautter ) and - without early New High German diphthonging - Suter (spelling and pronunciation variant: Sutter ) is an old German word for "seamstress, tailor, shoemaker", which died out in the 15th century and which is Latin via Middle High German sûtære, Old High German sũtāri sūtor “Schuster, Schuhmacher” goes back.
