Světec (German: Schwaz ) is a municipality in Okres Teplice in the Czech Republic . 930 inhabitants live on an area of 1234 hectares. The municipality belongs to the micro-region Svornost ("Eintracht") .

history

Swetiz was first mentioned in writing in 1209; other spellings were Sowez , Swietecz and Swietetz . The history of the place is closely linked to the fate of the St. Augustine Monastery, which was founded by the Knights' Order of Women with the Red Cross - keeper of God's grave . It was attacked by the Hussites in 1419 and completely destroyed in 1421. The nuns fled to the woods near pearl barley . The last surviving nun hid the sanctuary of the destroyed monastery in a tree. The discovery of this sanctuary is closely linked to the founding legend of Mariaschein near Graupen.

Until the 18th century Světec was a purely rural village, when brown coal deposits were discovered there. The Archbishops founded the Florentini and Patria I – III mines . The church lands were confiscated by Czechoslovakia in 1918 .

On October 1, 1938, the place came to Germany as part of the Sudetenland . From 1943 there was a penal camp in Schwaz.

The former districts of Chotovenka (Kuttowenka) , Krupá (Kruppei) , Lyskovice (Liskowitz) and Pohradice (Poratsch) fell victim to lignite mining after the Second World War .

Attractions

The baroque Světec Castle was built in 1675–1682 by the Italian architect Antonio della Porta on the site of the old Romanesque monastery from the 13th century. The two-story building is surrounded by a large park.
