Nvidia Tegra is a one-chip system ( SoC ) based on the ARM architecture for mobile devices such as PDAs , cell phones , cars, tablet PCs and multimedia players from the manufacturer Nvidia . In addition to one or more ARM cores, the SoC also contains a graphics processor and integrated video decoder and encoder and fulfills all the tasks of a chipset . He is u. a. comparable to the Snapdragon from Qualcomm or the Open Multimedia Application Platform from Texas Instruments.
Overview of the technology
APX 2500/2600
The first generation of the Tegra is based on an ARM11 - MPCore . The chip is manufactured using 65 nm technology . According to the manufacturer, the power consumption is a maximum of 200 mW .
In addition to the ARM core, a graphics processor is integrated into the system, the computing power of which is comparable to that of the Nvidia GeForce 6 series . This means that high definition videos with up to 720 lines can be played back and compressed in real time, and photos with up to 12 megapixels can be processed. As video codecs are H.264 , MPEG-4 and WMV9 supported. The processor is supported by Microsoft Windows Mobile as well as special Linux kernels (also Android ).
Tegra 250
The Tegra 250 is an ARM Cortex-A9 MPCore with up to 1 GHz. The 3D performance has been doubled compared to the previous models according to the manufacturer. This is also used for netbooks like the Toshiba AC100. Initial tests show that the Tegra 250, depending on the operating system and test program used, can compete with Intel Atom processors .

- improved 192-core GPU clocked at 900 MHz and based on an SMX block with new shared architecture Kepler , this GPGPU supports CUDA and OpenGL 4.4. The GPU provides a computing power of 384 GFLOPS and is supposed to work approx. 1.5 times more energy-efficiently (computing power per watt) than Apple A7 and Qualcomm Snapdragon-800 .
- Manufactured at Foundry TSMC in a 28 nm HPM process
- approx. 50 times as fast as Tegra 2
- was released in July 2014 (version with ARM Cortex-A15 MPCore R3) and October 2014 ( Project Denver ).
- special version for the automotive market under the name Tegra-K1-VCM , which will be used in driver assistance and infotainment systems
64-bit Denver CPU
Under the name Denver , Nvidia developed its first own ARM CPU, a 64-bit ARMv8-compatible core, after having previously used CPUs exclusively licensed by ARM. A special feature is that the original ARM code is converted into a proprietary microcode at runtime, which can be processed more quickly. According to the relevant benchmark results, the Denver CPU is not only significantly faster than the fastest original core from ARM, the ARM Cortex-A57 , but also as Apple's in-house development Cyclone . Denver should even be able to keep up with low-end versions of Intel × 86 processors ( Haswell ) . First use of the CPU in the HTC Nexus 9 (October 2014).
Tegra X1 (code name Erista)
- Processor: Quad ARM Cortex-A57 + Quad ARM Cortex-A53
- GPU architecture Maxwell 256-core GPU clocked at 1 GHz and based on two SMM blocks. The GPU delivers a computing power of a maximum of 512 GFLOPS with single accuracy (FP32) and 1024 GFLOPS with half accuracy (FP16) and should work around 45% more energy-efficiently (computing power per watt) than the Apple A8 . It works through graphics-heavy benchmarks up to twice as fast as the Apple A8.
- Production at Foundry TSMC in a 20 nm process
- was presented in January 2015.
- special platforms for the automotive market under the names DRIVE CX and DRIVE PX , which will be used in driver assistance systems and infotainment systems.
use
The APX 2500 was officially presented by Nvidia on February 12, 2008 at the GSM World Congress in Barcelona . The processor has been built into cell phones since 2009. The first media player with the chip was the Microsoft Zune HD , which has a high graphics performance thanks to the hardware platform. So the player can play 3D games and 720p videos.
The Tegra 2 and 3 have been installed in various products such as smartphones, tablet PCs and single-board computers since the end of 2010.
The Tegra X1 is used in the Nintendo Switch .
Embedded
For the embedded market there are still processor modules from the following companies:
- Avionic Design Tamonten System , consisting of:
- Evaluation board incl. FPGA, Tamonten NG evaluation carrier
- Tegra 2 or Tegra 3 processor modules with a focus on IO support
- Toradex (focus on compatibility)
- e-con Systems (focus on compatibility)
These modules are available individually or in combination with carrier boards for individuals as well as companies and allow you to implement your own products or projects based on the Tegra processors. So the Tegra 3 z. B. in the new radio navigation systems in the new Audi A3 and VW Golf VII use.
Linux support
Nvidia provides proprietary drivers for the Tegra as part of its Linux-for-Tegra development kit. Nvidia and the embedded partner Avionic Design are working on open source drivers that will be incorporated into the Linux kernel.
