The Complete RCA Victor Recordings is a 1995 double CD compilation of recordings conducted by jazz trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie . The recordings were made between May 17, 1937 and July 6, 1949 for the RCA Victor label.
reception
In a review for Allmusic Richard S. Ginell wrote: "Even if the size of this double CD with a summary of all Victor recordings by Dizzy obviously places it in the history of the development of bebop , it is also very essential for Latin Jazz collections" .
The The Penguin Guide to Jazz missed not only five stars, but also a "crown" for this compilation, which is a special award and special appreciation by the authors.
Hot mallets
To "Hot Mallets" that Gillespie along with the big band of Lionel Hampton recorded on 11 September 1939, which Gillespie biographer wrote Jürgen Wölfer, Hampton did it obliges the best musicians who were present just in New York, alto saxophonist Benny Carter , who also wrote the arrangements , Coleman Hawkins , Chu Berry , Ben Webster played tenor, the rhythm section consisted of Clyde Hart , Charlie Christian , Milt Hinton and Cozy Cole . Only a trumpeter was missing. The musicians who were talking, Roy Eldridge , Hot Lips Page , Buck Clyton , Charlie Shavers were all out of town so someone suggested Gillespie. This all-star band then recorded four tracks, "When Lights Are Low", "One Sweet Letter from You", "Hot Mallets" and "Early Session Hop". Gillespie played (with mute) on all tracks in the ensemble, the solos are reserved for saxophonists,
- “With Hot Mallets, however, he has a solo over the full chorus (32 bars). This solo made history. It is a step away from Eldridge towards Gillespie's own style, which took several years to develop fully. Knowing how he will play later on, one suspects the things that were to come after this solo. Hampton himself considers this solo to be the first ever bebop solo ”.
Two bass hit
In 1947 Gillespie was the first bebop musician to get a contract with RCA-Victor, one of the three big labels of the time alongside Columbia and Decca Records . The first four titles were written on August 22, 1947; According to Jürgen Wölfer, "Ow" and "Stay On It" are still very much in the Swing era. The great "Two Bass Hit" by John Lewis was the highlight of the session and "Oop-Pop-A-Da" with vocals by Gillespie and Kenny Hagood became a commercial success and sold better than the original by Babs Gonzales .
