action

The fourth season will initially be determined by the upcoming presidential elections, in which President Bartlet must compete against his Republican adversary Robert Ritchie. Ultimately, President Bartlet clearly wins the election. A staff change takes place in the communications office: Because Sam is running in a congressional election for a district in California, Will Bailey takes over the position of deputy communications director. Towards the end of the season, Zoey Bartlet, the president's daughter, is kidnapped at a party. Since he can no longer exercise his office due to the burdens, President Bartlet is releasing himself from his duties for the time being. Instead of John Hoynes, who had to step down as Vice President days earlier, the tasks under the 25th Amendment to the Republican Speaker of the House of Representatives are transferred .
