Thomas Conrad Brezina (born January 30, 1963 in Vienna ) is an Austrian writer for children and young people , screenwriter , television presenter and producer . He is best known for his book series Die Knickerbocker-Gang , Ein Fall für dich und das Tiger-Team as well as the series Tom Turbo and the accompanying television series.

Brezina was already active as a writer during his school days and received the “ Great Austrian Youth Prize ” in 1978 for his scripts for the puppet television series “Tim, Tom and Dominik”. Subsequently, he began as a puppeteer with Arminio Rothstein , better known as the clown Habakuk, and played there, among other things, the magician Tintifax.

Brezina wrote bedtime stories and radio plays for the radio and finally began as an assistant director for programs such as Am dam des , a children's program on Austrian Broadcasting Corporation (ORF) . Subsequently, Brezina became a permanent employee at ORF as an editor, director and finally a presenter for children's and youth programs.

In 1990 he made his breakthrough as an author of books for children and young people with the book series Die Knickerbocker-Gang . Three years later a detective series followed with Tom Turbo about the greatest bike in the world, from which an interactive detective show on ORF was created. Since 2008 he has been responsible for okidoki , ORF's children's program.

Brezina lives in Vienna and London . Most of his books were written in London. In his private life, the author is involved in charities for disadvantaged children and in 1996 became the official ambassador of UNICEF Austria. On his 50th birthday, he sponsored children as part of “Light for the World” and is a testimonial for Volkshilfe Austria . In the Ö3 radio program “Breakfast at my house” with Claudia Stöckl on November 12, 2017, Brezina announced that he married his partner Ivo in June 2016 in London.

Works

Books

In total, Brezina wrote more than 550 books, some of which have been translated into over 35 languages. Over 40 million books sold make him one of the most successful German-speaking authors of books for children and young people.

Through his work on various scripts, Brezina got the offer to write books. In 1990 he made his breakthrough as an author of books for children and young people with the book series Die Knickerbocker-Gang . The crime series served as a template for a musical , a play , a film and a television series in 1995/1996 . Three years later he created Tom Turbo , the “greatest bike in the world”, whose book series and interactive television format have been running for 20 years.

Other series of books followed, such as Seven Paws for Penny , No Guys ! Access for witches only! or a case for you and the Tiger team . With the Tiger team, Thomas Brezina was also able to celebrate international successes, especially in China, and even overtook Harry Potter there in terms of sales figures. Thomas Brezina also writes series that are specifically aimed only at boys or only girls.

Brezina's books are the basis for cinema and television films ( Die Knickerbocker-Gang: Das Sprechende Grab , Tom Turbo - From 0 to 111 ), plays, musicals (e.g. Ritter Rups and the Pirate Potato Salad ), radio plays and interactive video games . He was also involved in the design of textbooks, worked as an author and presenter on a series of school videos about famous composers and wrote an interactive art book series for children ( Museum of Adventure ). Most recently, the series A MINI-Fall für dich und das Tiger-Team (an adaptation of the Tiger-Team for younger readers) and Liz Kiss (a girl series about a ninja superhero) appeared.

In spring 2017, Brezina announced on his Facebook page that she would write a new case of the Knickerbocker gang, which should be aimed specifically at former readers. The action takes place 20 years after the end of the last band and the four members of the gang are now adults themselves. With the involvement of his Facebook fans, Brezina's first adult book was created, which appeared on November 9, 2017. Just one week after the publication date, on November 15, 2017, the book entered the bestseller list of the Main Association of the Austrian Book Trade in the field of fiction . On September 20, 2018, the second part of the adult series was published under the name “Shadows of the Future”, and Brezina once again asked his fans for support in the creation of the book via Facebook and Instagram. Most of the action in the second part takes place in London.

In the autumn of 2018, the book publisher edition a published the first non-fiction book by Thomas Brezina with “Just do it and believe in it”. The book brings the reader closer to tips and tricks on the subject of joy and a happier life by means of short, partly autobiographical chapters. For his first non-fiction book, Brezina was awarded the golden book by the Main Association of the Austrian Book Trade .

In February 2019, the same publisher published “Die Freude-Emergency-Apotheke” with 21 things that help with a lack of joy.

In November 2019 Thomas Brezina published his first romance novel "Liebesbrief an Unbekannt" at edition a . The book is about a desperate young lady who begins to write love letters to an unknown recipient - her dream man. After a week, the book was in second place on the bestseller list of the Main Association of the Austrian Book Trade, where it was in the top 10 for over 10 weeks.

During the COVID-19 pandemic , Thomas Brezina published an e-book entitled "That too will pass - staying happy in difficult times" for free download.

TV

Brezina was involved in the creation of over 40 television formats, partly as an author, producer or presenter. The programs are mainly on the ORF program, but are also broadcast on TV Educasi, Al Jaazera Children, Arte, DaVinci Learning, Nick, Sat.1 and SuperRTL. For years he wrote the scripts for the traffic education program Helmi. Brezina has appeared as a presenter in the television formats Am dam des , Die Rätselburg , Spielegalaxie , Drachenschatz and Forscherexpress . One of his best-known programs in Austria is the children's crime series The Hot Track / Tom Turbo / Tom Turbo Detective Club , which he designed and has been running regularly in the ORF children's program since 1993.

Brezina has been responsible for okidoki , ORF's children's program, since 2008 . As part of okidoki, Thomas Brezina moderated, for example, Trickfabrik , 7 Miracles and Exactly, that's how it works . He is also involved in the conception of series that were created as part of okidoki, but are also broadcast on partner stations such as KIKA . The flagship among them is currently the ABC Bear , in which children are given playful support in learning to read. Since the summer of 2016, the program has been expanded to include English-language elements to additionally support learning new languages.

Other Projects

Aside from books, films and television, Brezina has organized series of events for children, such as the Vienna Detective , a free book campaign by the City of Vienna for children between the ages of 6 and 12, which Brezina started together with the then Vice Mayor of Vienna Grete Laska . The aim of the campaign was to arouse the children's desire to read and to encourage them to get to know their city better. The first game started in 2004 with the free book campaign “ Das Gold des Basilisk ”. In the book, which is a special volume of the A Case for You and the Tiger Team series, there was a riddle that helped you crack a code word that you could use to register on the project's website and win prizes every week . The weekly winners competed against each other in the final in October 2004. The winner was allowed to spend a weekend in London and visit the Sherlock Holmes Museum with Thomas Brezina . The game was continued in the anniversary year 2005 (60 years of the Second Republic). The new book by Thomas Brezina, which deals with the post-war years in Vienna, 50 years of the State Treaty, 60 years of the end of the war, was called “ Dear Augustine's Treasure ”. As in the previous year, 50,000 free books were distributed to the children of Vienna. As a result, and the Internet game between the end of March / beginning of April and the end of June, Vienna should become an experience for children. Together with Gerhard Krammer, Brezina wrote four musicals about Rups, the little knight, for the family festival Forchtenstein Fantastisch at Forchtenstein Castle , which were performed for a total of seven years.

The Serfaus – Fiss – Ladis tourist region offers an adventure hiking trail for children that was designed by Brezina. The "Adventure Mountains" program includes three hiking trails on which children can use special equipment to solve various puzzles.

For St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna, Brezina created an audio guide for children that presents the cathedral's past in an age-appropriate manner.

In 2017, the visitor center, a multimedia adventure world for young and old, was opened at Vienna International Airport , where you can explore what is happening at the airport and in aviation. It was designed by Thomas Brezina, among others.

In July 2019 the app " Zoo adventures by and with Thomas Brezina " was presented at Schönbrunn Zoo . The application is available free of charge for iOS and Android smartphones and guides the user through various tours such as "Thomas Brezina's Favorite Animals" guided by the bestselling author through the Schönbrunn Zoo.
