The 17th stage of the Tour de France 2007 on July 26th was 188.5 kilometers long and led the riders from Pau northeast through the southwest region of Aquitaine , specifically through the departments Pyrénées-Atlantiques , Hautes-Pyrénées , Gers and Tarn-et -Garonne , to Castelsarrasin in the south-western region of Midi-Pyrénées . The eighth flat stage had a total of six mountain ratings in the third and fourth categories.

After Michael Rasmussen, who wore the yellow jersey , left his team because of false information about his whereabouts for training purposes, the stage started without wearing the leadership jersey . In addition, only 19 teams took part in the tour after the Cofidis team withdrew their drivers due to the positive doping results from Cristian Moreni .

Immediately after the start, at the initiative of Xavier Florencio, a small group withdrew, but was quickly caught up again. After that, after driving five kilometers, an eight-man group attacked with Martin Elmiger , Daniele Bennati , Daniele Righi , Markus Fothen , Jens Voigt , Matteo Tosatto , Manuel Quinziato and David Millar , behind whom a group of pursuers formed, which was quickly caught up again. As a result, the breakaway group was only able to slowly pull away from the field on the initially wavy profile, as the Caisse d'Epargne team had taken up the chase there. She held the lead at a maximum of about 2:30 minutes before the pursuit was given up and the outliers were able to increase their lead significantly from 80 kilometers to the finish.

Over the next 50 kilometers, the outliers extended their lead to up to eight minutes, before 19.5 kilometers from the finish, on the last small hill of the day, with the unity in the leading group, as Millar had attacked for the first time. This was followed by further attacks by Voigt and Fothen, which initially caused Righi and Quinziato to fall back. After Fothen stepped up the pace even more, Millar and Tosatto could no longer follow, leaving only Fothen, Voigt, Bennati and Elmiger in the lead. From this group, Voigt attacked again four kilometers from the finish, but could not break away because Bennati kept trying. In the end, Fothen attacked on a short incline 1.5 kilometers from the finish, but also failed to break away. So the four drivers drove to the finish line together, where Daniele Bennati won ahead of Markus Fothen, Martin Elmiger and Jens Voigt. This was followed by Millar and Tosatto and then Quinziato and Righi. Tom Boonen won the mass sprint of the main field, which reached the finish 9:37 minutes behind the winner, for ninth place .

After Michael Rasmussen's exit, the previous second-placed Alberto Contador took the lead in the overall standings with 1:53 minutes ahead of Cadel Evans and 2:49 minutes over his team-mate Levi Leipheimer . In addition, Contador in the junior classification, Mauricio Soler in the mountain classification, Tom Boonen in the sprint classification and Discovery Channel in the team classification remained at the top of the various ratings.
