Race course
The attacks began immediately after the start and again Sylvain Chavanel was there, who was able to break away this time. He was overtaken by 19 other drivers, so that a 20-man lead formed, which was followed by seven other drivers, three of whom were left behind, while Rubén Pérez , Jérôme Pineau Rui Costa and Adriano Malori were able to catch up with the front runners. Before the merger, Mickaël Delage managed to win the first mountain classification and the intermediate sprint. Together, the now 24-strong top group managed to increase the lead to over six minutes. Delage was also the first to reach the second summit, followed by Chavanel. In the main field, which was still led by the Europcar team , Mark Cavendish lost the connection, but was brought back by Bernhard Eisel . In the downhill, Costa was left behind, while Julien El-Farès attacked in front , followed by Sandy Casar and later David Millar . Together they achieved a lead of over two minutes over their pursuers, to whom Costa also managed to catch up again, and over nine minutes on the main field.
At the foot of the fourth mountain, the Col d'Agnes, Christophe Riblon attacked the chasing group, leaving four drivers behind. In the field too, Leopard Trek increased the pace and formed a group . Riblon managed to catch up with the three-man top group, shortly afterwards Millar lost the connection. Closed to him Egor Silin on. From this a top group of nine formed, which consisted of Silin, El-Farès, Jens Voigt , Casar, Riblon, Millar, Rémy Di Gregorio , Gorka Izagirre , Xabier Zandio and Anthony Charteau , to which Linus Gerdemann and Chavanel also found the connection. Meanwhile, Kristijan Koren, the first of the breakaway group, was caught up again, and later Pineau as well. In the mountain classification, Chavanel got the most points in front of Charteau.
In the descent, Izagirre was able to pull away. Laurens ten Dam fell further back but was able to continue. Izagirre won the fifth mountain classification. In this descent Voigt fell twice and subsequently fell back into the field. Luis León Sánchez and Marco Marcato from the second chasing group, who caught up with the first, attacked but were caught again. Now a group of five formed from Millar, Ruben Pérez, Bauke Mollema , Marcato and El-Farès, who took up the pursuit of the front-runner and it came back to merge, also with other drivers. Next, Chavanel attacked, who in turn was provided by Sánchez and Rubén Pérez, the latter was able to stay in front the longest and was the first to reach the final climb.
In the final ascent, Casar attacked and took the lead. The group of favorites led by Leopard Trek came closer, with many riders falling out of this group. The leader, meanwhile, was followed by Riblon and Zandio. After that there were some attacks in the favorite group, to which Thomas Voeckler still belonged, often by Andy Schleck , but no one was able to break away decisively. Jelle Vanendert , who was still ahead of the group, attacked and took the lead from Casar, who was then caught by the group of favorites. From this also attacked Samuel Sánchez , but Vanendert could not catch up. The result of the climb to Luz-Ardiden was the opposite: Vanendert, who also won the dotted jersey , won ahead of Sánchez.
At that time, the top group still consisted of nine drivers: Cadel Evans , Andy Schleck, Fränk Schleck , Jean-Christophe Péraud , Voeckler, Ivan Basso , Alberto Contador , Rigoberto Urán and Pierre Rolland , from which there were still a few attacks. As on the 12th stage, one of the Schleck brothers crossed the finish line before the other favorites. This time it was Andy who managed to beat the remaining favorites by two seconds.
