Turi (in the local dialect: Tùre ) is a southern Italian municipality ( comune ) with 12,994 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the metropolitan city of Bari in Apulia . The municipality is located about 26 kilometers southeast of Bari and about 52 kilometers northwest of Taranto .
history
Presumably already existed in 6./7. In the 17th century a Peuketeer settlement was here , which stretched over about 25 hectares. Possibly it was the Thuriae settlement mentioned by Titus Livius .
During the time of fascism, numerous anti-fascists were imprisoned in Turi.
Personalities
- Giovanni Maria Sabino (1588–1649), organist and composer
- Antonio Gramsci (1891–1937), Marxist philosopher, anti-fascist and founder of the Communist Party of Italy, imprisoned in Turi from 1928 to 1933.

traffic
The Strada Statale 172 dei Trulli leads through the municipality from Casamassima via Putignano to Alberobello . There is a train station on the non-electrified Bari-Casamassima-Putignano railway line.

Turi maintains partnerships with the Slovenian municipality of Sežana in the Obalno-kraška region and with the Luxembourg municipality of Roeser in the canton of Esch an der Alzette .
