United States Department of War
The United States Department of War (English United States Department of War ) was from 1789 to 1947, responsible for the ground forces, the Ministry of USA . It was in the 1947 Department of the Army of Defense transferred.
Minister of War
The Ministry was headed by the Secretary of War . The Minister of War was also a member of the Cabinet . He was initially responsible for all military affairs. In 1798 a Secretary of the Navy was appointed to the cabinet for the first time . As a result, the Minister of War's area of responsibility was limited to the army .
In 1947 the areas were merged under the Ministry of Defense. The office of Minister of War was replaced by that of Secretary of the Army . For the Air Force , which was split off from the US Army at the same time , an equal post, that of Secretary of the Air Force, was introduced. However, both are no longer members of the cabinet, but report to the defense minister and are comparable in rank to a state secretary .
