Uppsala Reggae Festival
The Uppsala Reggae Festival is the largest reggae festival in Scandinavia . The visitors come from all over Northern Europe . In 2004 and 2005, 10,000 people came to the Uppsala Reggae Festival.
history
The first Uppsala Reggae Festival took place in the summer of 2001. As early as 1995, the name "Uppsala Reggae Festival" was used for a concert with the performers Culture, Beres Bazza, Top Cat and others. However, the first open-air concert took place in 2001 , so this year is seen as the founding year.
The first festival lasted one day and took place in Fyrishov's open air swimming center in central Uppsala . The most important performers were Black Uhuru , Sly and Robbie and Culture . In connection with the Uppsala Reggae Festival 2001, Uppsala was nicknamed “The Reggae Mecca of Scandinavia” by Swedish television . At that time the festival was the only one of its kind in all of Scandinavia.
The festival was very well received. In the second year the number of visitors rose by around 70 percent. The venue was again Fyrishov; notable performers were Luciano , Junior Kelly and Red Rat .
Due to the increasing interest, the duration of the festival was extended by one day in 2003. Fyrishov also seemed too small as the venue, so the concert was moved to Ekeby Qvarn, a place a little outside of Uppsala. There were stalls, food tents and a camping area at the festival . Important performers were Gentleman , who had his first appearance in Sweden, Barrington Levy , Max Romeo and Misty in Roots . The latter had their first appearance in Sweden in over 20 years. The third Uppsala Reggae Festival was awarded the annual culture award by the Swedish Radio.
The fourth Uppsala Reggae Festival has been moved back to the center of the city, between Studenternas IP and Kungsängsbron, with the support of the local government in Uppsala. More stalls were represented at the festival and there were three different camping areas; the number of visitors rose again. It was represented with 40 artists, the largest number of performers that has ever performed in Scandinavia. Among others were Iqulah , Bushman , the Mighty Diamonds and Alpha Blondy on; Chuck Fenda and Richie Spice had their first appearances in Scandinavia. The festival has made this location an official venue for music events in Uppsala.
The fifth Uppsala Reggae Festival performed among others Anthony B , Capleton , Tanya Stephens and The Gladiators , who had their last tour with singer and founder Albert Griffiths; Cocoa Tea had its only appearance in Europe. Due to public demand, Gentleman made his second appearance. The record label Xterminator presented numerous artists, including Jah Mason and Turbulence . Lutan Fyah and Chezidek had their first appearances in Scandinavia.
In 2006 the duration of the festival was extended to three days. Performances included Sizzla , Don Carlos , Groundation , Israel Vibration and The Congos . In the following year Bunny Wailer appeared, Anthony B and Capleton were represented again and Soldiers Of Jah Army had their first appearance in Northern Europe .
