Våler is a Norwegian municipality in Fylke Innlandet with 3662 inhabitants (as of February 27, 2020). The seat of the administration is in the village of the same name. Våler is located in the Solør district and is therefore sometimes also called “Våler i Solør”.

geography

Våler borders Sweden in the northeast and lies between the municipalities of Elverum and Åsnes . Norway's longest river, the Glomma , flows through the municipality for 17 kilometers . The banks of the river have soils that are favorable for agriculture. In large parts of the terrain, both in the east and in the west of the Glomma, it is wooded and hilly, with elevations around 600  moh. The highest point of the municipality is the Kjølberget with 704.9  moh. The forest is part of the Norwegian-Swedish border forest Finnskogen .

Most of the population lives along the Glomma, where the administrative center of Våler and the village of Braskereidfoss are located. The areas in Finnskogen, in particular, have seen a greater decrease in population. The inhabitants of the municipality are called "Vålsokning" or "Vålersokning".

The Elverum – Kongsvinger railway runs through Våler , with only goods traffic , and Riksvei 2 . Two bridges cross the Glomma in the village of Våler.

history

Våler was part of Fylke Hedmark until January 1st, 2020 . However, as part of the regional reform in Norway, this was transferred to the newly created province of Innlandet.

economy

Agriculture and forestry play a major role in the municipality's economic life. Mainly grain and potatoes are grown on the agriculturally used areas. Grain is sown on around 81 percent of the area. 163,000 cubic meters of wood were harvested in 2016. The wood processing industry is also important to Våler. Both the largest chipboard factory and the largest sawmill in Norway are located within the municipality .

The municipality's only power station is located in Braskereidfoss. It has been in operation since 1978.

Sports

In the district Gjerdrum is the 1912 built Gjerdrumsbakken in the 2000s repeatedly jumping from the ski jumping Continental Cup took place.
