The architecture office gmp was founded in 1965 by the architects Meinhard von Gerkan and Volkwin Marg . In the same year, she won the international competition for the new Berlin-Tegel Airport , which catapulted the architects "into the premier league of planners right after their studies". In addition to two locations in Hamburg and one in Berlin, gmp has other branches in Aachen , Beijing , Shanghai , Shenzhen and Hanoi . In national and international competitions, gmp has won over 400 first prizes and over 250 awards for exemplary architecture and projects. Nine buildings have already been placed under monument protection. In 2008, gmp founded the Academy for Architectural Culture , which is dedicated to “finding solutions to relevant architectural issues and training young architects from different cultures”. In addition to the founding partners, the four partners Nikolaus Goetze , Hubert Nienhoff , Stephan Schütz and Wu Wei manage the office today (2020) .

According to its own admission, the company takes a “generalist position” and builds “in every scale and cultural context on all continents - from residential buildings to stadiums, from operas to museums, from office buildings to bridges, from door handles to entire cities . "Gmp is known above all for large projects such as airports, cultural buildings and train stations, but also for" dealing with historical building fabric. "In stadium construction, the office is considered to be" a world leader. "

Since its founding, gmp has not only realized architectural icons such as Berlin-Tegel Airport , Berlin Central Station or the New Leipzig Trade Fair Center, but also numerous buildings with "sometimes extremely commercial orientations by clients", for which Gmp has a "consistently high quality standard" "under the most complex conditions at home and abroad ”and“ despite routine procedures ”.

In the construction of Berlin Brandenburg Airport , gmp played a leading role in the planning association Berlin-Brandenburg International (pg bbi) until the airport company terminated pg bbi in May 2012. A special commission of the Federal Ministry of Transport assessed the dismissal in February 2013 as a mistake, an assessment that has since been made the same by many sides. At the beginning of 2018, the airport company and gmp ended their legal dispute with a settlement.

Gmp is considered the most successful European architecture firm in China. By the end of 2015, the office had a total of 93 buildings in China, over fifty buildings designed by gmp were under construction and more than forty were in the planning stage. The city of Lingang New City is planned for 800,000 residents of Gmp by 2020 .

As the largest German architecture firm, gmp ranks eleventh in the European ranking (2019). In a global comparison of the largest architecture and planning offices, gmp ranks 23rd (2019).
