Career

Houlder first played three years from 1984 to 1987 with the North Bay Centennials in the Ontario Hockey League . He was able to increase his number of points every year. After being in the 1985 NHL Entry Draft in the fourth round at the 82nd position from the Washington Capitals was selected, he moved to the 1987-88 season playing professionally in the Franchise of the capital. By the end of the 1989/90 season , the defender spent the season between the NHL squad and the farm team in the minor league . Even after moving to the Buffalo Sabers , the same fate overtook him in the following three seasons.

In his final season with the Sabers farm team, the San Diego Gulls from the International Hockey League , he was awarded the Governor's Trophy for the best defender in the league after scoring 72 points in 64 games. It was not until the 1993 NHL Expansion Draft changed to the newly founded Mighty Ducks of Anaheim that Houlder received a regular place in the squad of an NHL club. During his year-long engagement with the Mighty Ducks, he played the best NHL season of his career with 39 points in 80 games.

Nevertheless, the Anaheim management transferred him to the St. Louis Blues in August 1995 for Jason Marshall , where he was able to build on the performance of the previous year with 18 points from 41 games in the lockout- shortened season 1994/95 . As a free agent , the Canadian changed team again in the summer of 1995 and ran for two years for the Tampa Bay Lightning before he went to the San Jose Sharks on a free agent basis before the 1997/98 season .

After two years in San Jose, Houlder was part of a five-player transfer deal that sent him, Andrei Sjusin , Steve Guolla and Shawn Burr back to Tampa Bay for Niklas Sundström and a draft suffrage. There, Houlder took over the position of team captain for the first 14 games of the season before he was selected from the waiver list by the Nashville Predators . After four seasons with the Predators, he ended his active career after the 2002/03 season .

Since summer 2017, Houlder has been the assistant coach of the North Bay Centennials in the Ontario Hockey League.
