The square village of Winkeln was first mentioned as Winkele in 1208 . In contrast to the other Seelitz districts, Winkeln did not belong to the Rochlitz office , but originally belonged to the Zschillen monastery . This came in 1543 with the entire property to Duke Moritz von Sachsen , who immediately secularized it and exchanged it for the Lords of Schönburg for the places Hohnstein , Wehlen and Lohmen in today's Saxon Switzerland . Therefore, the name Wechselburg came up for the place and the monastery complex. Since then, Winkeln has been run as an official village of the Schönburg lordship, Wechselburg , which belonged to the Lords of Schönburg under Wettin suzerainty. Due to its historical affiliation to the Wechselburg rulership, Winkeln is a church part of Topfseifersdorf .

As part of the administrative reorganization of the Kingdom of Saxony, Winkeln was subordinated to the administration of the Royal Saxon Office of Rochlitz as part of the Schönburg feudal lordship of Wechselburg in 1835 . In 1856, Winkeln came to the Mittweida court office and in 1875 to the newly established Rochlitz administration .

Through the second district reform in the GDR in 1952, Winkeln was incorporated into the Rochlitz district in the Chemnitz district (renamed the Karl-Marx-Stadt district in 1953 ). On March 1, 1963, it was incorporated into Zschoppelshain . As a district of the municipality of Zschoppelshain, Winkeln belonged to the Saxon district of Rochlitz from 1990 onwards . With the incorporation of Zschoppelshain to Wechselburg , Winkeln was reclassified to Seelitz on January 1, 1994, which was incorporated into the newly formed Mittweida district and in 2008 the Central Saxony district.
