This is a list of famous people and celebrities that were either born in or have lived in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia.
Chesapeake
- Stewart Copeland, drummer for rock band The Police and jazz ensemble Animal Logic, grew up in Chesapeake as the son of a CIA agent; brother Ian founded the Backstage Cafe chain of restaurants, one of which was located at the NorVa Theatre.
- Michael Cuddyer, professional baseball third baseman for the Minnesota Twins (born in Norfolk, raised in Chesapeake).
- Kenny Easley, professional football player with the Seattle Seahawks.
- Alonzo Mourning, professional basketball player for the Miami Heat.
- Darren Perry, football player with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
- Ricky Rudd, professional NASCAR race car driver.
- B.J. Upton, professional baseball shortstop for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays (born in Norfolk, raised in Chesapeake).
- Justin Upton, B.J.'s younger brother, a professional baseball player drafted #1 overall in 2005 by the Arizona Diamondbacks. (B.J. was the #2 overall pick in 2002.)

- Mike Husted, former kicker for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Oakland Raiders
- Allen Iverson, professional basketball player; Point guard for the Philadelphia 76ers; born in Hampton, raised in Newport News (but attended Bethel High School by using a friend's Hampton address). Mother and "adopted" father live in separate houses in the Marlbank community of York County.

- Pearl Bailey, Tony award winning actress (Hello Dolly!), singer
- Larry Bethea, late professional football player for the Dallas Cowboys was a standout at Ferguson High School and a Parade All-American.
- Blessid Union of Souls, rock band that lived and played in Newport News for many years; had hit song "Oh, Virginia" that extolled Hampton Roads.
- Aaron Brooks, professional football quarterback for the New Orleans Saints.
- Joyce Bulifant, comedic actress who gained fame on 1950s and 60s TV shows.
- Robert Cray, blues guitarist, began his musical career as a student at Denbigh High School.
- Frankie Faison, film actor featured in Silence of The Lambs, White Chicks, Gods and Generals, "Hanibal," Do The Right Thing, Coming to America, Mississippi Burning, and The Money Pit.
- Ella Fitzgerald, jazz singer.
- The Five Keys, popular soul and doo-wop act in the 1950s; featuring Newport News locals Ripley Ingram, Bernie West, and Rudy West.
- Ava Gardner, popular movie actress born in Smithfield, N.C. and raised in Newport News.
- Johnny Gilbert, announcer for the hit television quiz show Jeopardy!
- Gary Hudson, Warwick High School graduate and actor featured in numerous TV series and the film Road House with Patrick Swayze.
