Austria House

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As Austria House , in recent years most official Austria House , is the Austrian communications center at the Olympic Games , Paralympic Games and Alpine Ski World Championships respectively.

function

The idea of a house of international understanding goes back to the America House of the Americans and the Palais Palffy - Austria House programs that were started in Vienna during the occupation : The Austrian bilateral friendship societies and the umbrella association PaN were formed within the framework of the latter . It later became the Austrian Cultural Center . The Amerika-Haus Vienna still exists today as a cultural institute.

The first Austria house abroad was opened in 1960 at the initiative of the Chamber of Commerce at the Winter Olympics in Squaw Valley . After the simple log cabin from 1960, a representative building was erected for the first time for the 1968 Winter Olympics (Grenoble). It was introduced as an institution as early as 1970 at world championships ( Alpine World Championships Val Gardena ), where the building from 1968 was reused. The first official Austrian Olympic House was built for the 1984 Winter Games (Sarajevo).

Museum Lignorama in Riedau; Former Austria House for the 1998 Winter Olympics

Originally, the Österreichhaus was used as a presentation opportunity for Austrian economic products. Over the years, however, the concept has developed into a “crowd puller and communication center during the Olympic Games [...], which athletes, supervisors, journalists, sponsors, guests and friends of Austria like to visit. The reputation of special hospitality that precedes the Ö-Haus also attracts a lot of celebrities from all areas of society. ”In addition to the representation of the Austrian Olympic Committee (ÖOC) and the Austrian Paralympic Committee (OEPC), it also serves as an Olympic studio and World Cup Studio of the ORF , and so special in particular for any victory celebrations of the Austrian participants and press conferences, and achieved media coverage.

In addition to architectural renown - a specially built Austrian house shows either Austrian architecture, or European reception of the architecture of the host country - and as a showpiece of Austrian construction technology , the houses serve as a meeting point for international business talks and also represent Austria as a tourist country . Because of the enormous economic importance that winter sports have for Austria (and also the sporting successes - summer sports play a comparatively minor role), Austrian houses were only set up for the winter games, but since Athens 2004 also for the summer Olympic games. Since Turin 2006 , disabled athletes have been on equal terms with other athletes with regard to the use of the Österreichhaus.

To date, a total of around a dozen structures have been erected as the Österreichhaus, some as independent buildings, some as extensions and extensions. Most of them have been preserved and were put to secondary use. At the other events, rooms were rented or tents were erected.

World Championships Saalbach-Hinterglemm 1991

On the occasion of the Alpine Ski World Championships in 1991 in Saalbach-Hinterglemm , a historic Pinzgauerhof was rebuilt together with the municipality of Saalbach. The building from the 18th or early 19th century, the Bergerbauer , had already been bought and demolished by the municipality in 1987. Today it forms together with the Steinachhäusl from 1698 (rebuilt in 1994/95) the local museum and ski museum , and also serves as the community's event building.

Logo of the Austria House 2006

The building for the Olympic Winter Games in February 2006 and the Winter Paralympics in March 2006 in Turin was again in Sestriere , where the alpine competitions for the Winter Olympic Games were held. It was planned by the Radstadt architect Tom Lechner as a building in the style of the New Alpine Architecture , a combination of the formal language and materials of the traditional farmhouse styles of the Alpine region and contemporary wooden architecture. The Casa Austria had a usable area of 300 m² for the guest and VIP area, the ORF studio and presentation areas for the three sponsors of the house. After the Paralympics - for the first time the Österreicherhaus was also available for disabled sports - it was rebuilt in the ski jumping area of the Paul-Ausserleitner-Schanze in Bischofshofen.

The Austria House, Chinese  奧地利 之 家 , Pinyin àodìlìzhījiā , English Austria House for the Summer Games and Paralympics 2008 in Beijing was built in The Great Wall Sheraton Hotel Beijing (Starwood- Sheraton ). The Austria House should represent a mixture of tradition and modernity in China and take up elements of Feng Shui : The main building is designed in the style of classic temple architecture, colorfully framed with extensive glazing. Next to it is a decagonal pavilion with modernist tracery and a colorful roof reminiscent of stacked parasols. The area was created with sponsorship money with a budget of € 400,000. The area of the Austria House is still a popular starting point in the park of the Beijing Great Wall.

Vancouver (Whistler) 2010 Winter Olympics

Austria House 2010: Logo of the ÖOC

Also at the Olympic / Paralympic Winter Games in Vancouver , Canada 2010 there was again an Austria House. The special thing about this Austria house is that it was built as a passive house and in solid wood construction. It was carried out by the APG  (Austrian Passive House Group) , an association of five Austrian companies, based on a design by the architect Martin Treberspurg .

The passive house was not dismantled after the Olympic Games, but handed over to the city of Whistler as an “ambassador for energy-efficient building ” for further use. The passive house design project is intended to arouse global interest in sustainable construction - this technology is largely unknown in North America, only a few dozen houses have been built, and the building is attracting particular media coverage. It is used as a kind of SOS Children's Village and cultural center.

London 2012 Summer Olympics

Austria House Tirol 2012: Trinity House, London

At the Olympic / Paralympic Summer Games in London 2012, a fully privately financed Austria House was operated for the first time. The main sponsor was Tirol-Werbung , so that the house appeared as Austria House Tirol - the strange constellation that the house only represents one federal state was criticized. The national advertising value for the ÖOC sponsors was estimated at over 10 million euros.

For the first time, the house was made accessible not only to a select group of guests but to the general public. The house was visited by 45,000 paying guests in the three weeks (2000 / day), it was naturally a new visitor record for the institution.

It was set up in Trinity House , Tower Hill , near Tower Bridge , the former headquarters of the Corporation of Trinity House of Deptford Strond , the British beacon administration, which is now used as an event building.

Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics

The Austria House of the Olympic / Paralympic Winter Games Sochi 2012 was built in Krasnaya Polyana . As in previous years, the sponsor was Tirol Werbung . The adjacent Melody of Mountain Hotel was also rented. With the positioning at the ski venue Rosa Chutor , Austria (and also Germany with its house not far) did not correspond to the wish of the organizer to set up the national hospitality houses in Sochi on the Black Sea coast. The building was specially built. In Sochi, 25,000 people (including 6,300 guests of honor) visited the house during the games.

In Rio de Janeiro , Brazil , the Mansão Botafogo clubhouse of the football and sailing club Botafogo de Futebol e Regatas (Botafogo FR) was rented for the 2016 Olympic / Paralympic Summer Games . For this purpose, the Austria House was painted in red, white and red .

This time, the carrier was again the entire Austrian Österreich Werbung , which was even the subject of a parliamentary request for amortization. With 75,000 visitors, including 7,000 guests of honor and 68,000 in the public area, the numbers from London 2012 were exceeded. The climbing wall in the neighboring Rio Sul shopping center , initiated by Tirol Werbung, was also very popular.
