church

Village church

The Schwessiner Dorfkirche - a single-nave brick building with a western tower in front of it with a tapering roof - was built in 1886 after the previous church - of unknown age - had been demolished. During the construction period, all church valuables and parish registers were kept in the school opposite, which was also used as a place of worship. In 1885, however, it fell victim to a fire, and with it all valuables.

Two bells were installed in the church in 1886, one of which was cast by master bell founder AW Schuhmacher in Stettin in 1825. in the Second World War it had to be delivered for ammunition purposes. But she survived the war and found herself in the "bell cemetery" in Hamburg . Today it rings in Walsum - Aldenrade on the Lower Rhine.

In 1945 the former Protestant church was expropriated in favor of the Catholic Church. On September 25, 1945 it received a new consecration and the name Kościół Narodzenia Najświętszej Maryi Panny .

Parish

Before 1945, the population of Schwessin was almost exclusively of the Protestant denomination. The place was with Mersin (now Polish: Mierzym) a subsidiary community in the parish Geritz (Jarzyce) (from 1895 Geritz-Schwessin), in which the villages Thunow (Dunowo), Streckenthin (Strzekęcino), Gülz (Golica) and Barzlin (Bardzlino) were incorporated. It belonged to the parish of Köslin (Koszalin) in the church province of Pomerania of the Church of the Old Prussian Union . In 1895 the parish seat was moved from Geritz to Schwessin and a new parsonage was built here.

The parish had a total of 2,830 parishioners in 1940, of which 1,580 belonged to the Schwessin parish. The first clergyman to officiate in Schwessin was Pastor Georg Magdalinski . He was followed in 1933 by Pastor Kurt Niepel , who was the last German and Protestant clergyman until 1945.

Since 1945 the population of Świeszyno has been predominantly Catholic. The village has been an independent parish again since August 28, 1973, to which the subsidiary churches Jarzyce ( Geritz ) and Konikowo ( Konikow ) now belong and which is located in the dean's office Bobolice ( Bublitz ) in the diocese of Köslin-Kolberg of the Catholic Church in Poland . It has 3,237 parishioners. Previously active as clergy were: Honorat Rafał (until 1974), Stefan Olów (1974–1988), Ryszard Wojciechowski (1988–1991), Franciszek Knutelski (1991–1993), Andrzej Bartos (1993–2000) and Andrzej Bujar (since 2000 ).
