The first division in 1993 was the second season of the second highest Russian division in football. It started on April 3, 1993 and ended on November 6, 1993.

The total of 58 teams were divided into three zones. In the west group there were 22, in the mid-20s group and 16 in the east group. The teams competed against each other twice in a round trip.

The three group winners and the three clubs that occupied places 14 to 16 in the top league in 1993 played three starting places for the 1994 season in the top division.

The 1st league was reduced to only one season with 22 teams for 1994. Therefore, a total of 38 clubs were relegated.
