history

In 1898 the cycling club "Steeds voorwaarts" ( Dutch: "Always forward" ) was founded in Chaam in the southern Dutch province of Noord-Brabant . After various other cycling events, this hosted the first eight van Chaam on May 30, 1933 . A total of 275 guilders were awarded as prizes, with an entry fee of 75 cents. It is the oldest criterion for professional cyclists in the Netherlands.

The route is shaped like an “8” ( eight ), which gives it its name , with start and finish at the local church. Since 1992 - with interruptions - a race for women has also been organized. With the UCI categorization in 1994, the route had to be extended to 12 km in accordance with the regulations. At the end of 1998, the course was changed to a normal circuit with a length of 4 km, which had to be circled 25 times for a total distance of 100 kilometers. The route has been "8" -shaped again since 2010 and is now 4580 meters long.

In 2013 the 75th edition of the Eight van Chaam took place. The event is organized by the Eight van Chaam Foundation and has around 20,000 visitors annually. In earlier times up to around 60,000 visitors came to the 4,000-inhabitant town. The (miss) election for the Rondemiss is also part of the cultural run-up . On the evening before the Eight of Chaam there is a folk festival- like night of van Chaam . In order to financially secure the continuation of the race, the previous event has been subject to entry since 2014.

Since April 2014, Acht van Chaam has been part of the national intangible cultural heritage of the Kingdom of Netherlands .
