Albert Alexander Freiherr von Könitz (born September 4, 1842 in Augsburg , † March 19, 1925 in Munich ) was a Bavarian general of the cavalry .

Life

He was the only son of the Bavarian colonel and chamberlain Alexander Freiherr von Könitz (1790-1859) and his wife Henriette, born von Kerstorf (1807-1854). His sister Albertine Franziska Louise (1840–1915) was married to Christian Wilhelm Ludwig Abeken .

Military career

Koenitz graduated from the pagerie and in 1861 passed his Abitur at a humanistic grammar school . He then joined the 2nd Chevaulegers Regiment "Taxis" of the Bavarian Army as a Junker . With his promotion to sub-lieutenant he was transferred to the 6th Chevaulegers Regiment vacant "Duke of Leuchtenberg" at the end of February 1862 . As an orderly officer , Koenitz took part in the battles at Roßdorf and Roßbrunn in the 4th Division in 1866 during the war against Prussia .

During the war he was promoted to first lieutenant and after the peace treaty was transferred to the 3rd and in 1867 to the 4th Cavalry Brigade as adjutant to the major general and brigadier von Tausch . From 1869 he was employed by the General Staff of the 4th Division in Würzburg . With the beginning of the war against France , Koenitz became adjutant of the 1st Cavalry Brigade . In this position he took part in the battle at Beaumont , the battles at Sedan and Orléans and the siege of Paris . For his behavior Koenitz received the Iron Cross II. Class and the Knight's Cross II. Class of the Military Merit Order with Swords.

After the peace treaty , Koenitz graduated from the War Academy for three years from October 1, 1871 , which made him qualified for the general staff. In mid-December 1874 he became captain and squadron chief in the 6th Chevaulegers regiment "Grand Duke Constantin Nikolajewitsch". In 1877 he was assigned to the General Staff in Munich, where Könitz was promoted to major in mid-August 1879 . As such, he was posted to the General Staff in Berlin for six months . In 1884 Koenitz became a staff officer in the 1st Uhlan Regiment "Crown Prince Friedrich Wilhelm of the German Empire and of Prussia" and in this position in mid-February 1886, Lieutenant Colonel . From March 1887 to February 1891 he was in command of the 2nd Uhlan Regiment "König" . In the meantime promoted to colonel at the end of July 1888, Könitz was then given command of the 2nd Cavalry Brigade stationed in Augsburg . In this position he was promoted to major general on November 30, 1891. On September 25, 1894, Koenitz was appointed inspector of the cavalry and on November 9, 1895 was promoted to lieutenant general. This was followed by a position as commander of the 1st division in Munich from March 22, 1900 .

On January 25, 1904 Könitz was promoted to general of cavalry in approval of his leave request with the statutory board for disposition made while on duty for the adjutant general of the Prince Regent Luitpold of Bavaria appointed. Even after his death, Koenitz retained this position. During the First World War he was reused as a ZD officer and from August 1, 1914, he acted as the commanding general of the deputy general command of the III. Army Corps in Nuremberg . Shortly before and after the end of the war, Koenitz did nothing in the November Revolution to preserve the monarchy in Bavaria. His mobilization provision was lifted on November 21, 1918.

Koenitz stood à la suite of the 2nd Uhlan Regiment "König" and was holder of the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of St. Michael and the Order of Military Merit.

family

He had married Johanna Countess von Verri della Bosia (1857–1942) on January 15, 1883 in Würzburg. She was the daughter of the Bavarian general of the infantry Maximilian Verri della Bosia (1824-1909) and his wife Florentine, née Rudhart (1824-1907). The sons Hans Alexander (* 1883) and Heinrich Karl (* 1886) emerged from the marriage.
