Alvin and the Chipmunks 2 (Original title: Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel ) is a comedy film from 2009 by director Betty Thomas . Like its predecessor Alvin and the Chipmunks - The 2007 movie , it is a combination of real film and computer animation and is based on the music group Alvin and the Chipmunks, invented by Ross Bagdasarian .

action

After an accident during a concert in Paris , Dave, the "father" of the Chipmunks, has to stay in the hospital and sends Alvin, Theodore and Simon back to Los Angeles to see his aunt Jackie. As soon as the Chipmunks arrive at the airport, Aunt Jackie also had an accident in her wheelchair, so that her grandson Toby, who was only interested in computer games, had to take care of the three. Dave had previously organized regular school attendance for his pupils.

The three rodents suddenly have to deal with the typical problems faced by students. They meet a rival group of female chipmunks , the Chipettes, consisting of Eleanor, Brittany and Jeanette. Its manager is now Ian Hawke, who used to take care of the Chipmunks. Ian wants to make the Chipettes stars and earn a lot of money with it and makes sure that there is a great rivalry between the two groups. Both the Chipmunks and the Chipettes are fighting to represent the school in a music competition.

Alvin, who plays football on the school team, has to go to a game and misses the concert with which she wants to get into the music competition. Ian wants to take the Chippets to another concert and skip the competition, but the Chippets refuse and Ian locks them up. However, Alvin and the others help them and manage to defeat Ian. Finally, all six of them appear together in the music competition and win the prize money of 25,000 US dollars for the school. At the end you see Ian trying to disguise himself as chippets with hand puppets, but is brought off the stage by the security service.

Reviews

"Hardly cobbled together, the sequel can never make up for its weaknesses in terms of content with poor slapstick sequences and the chirping singing skills of its animated" actors "."

“This is where love comes into play. Which may sound harmless, but in view of the carefully computer-generated child scheme, it looks quite irritating. Open mouths, seductive looks - have the chipmunks always been through puberty? Or is what is already expressed in the R'n'B poses of the Chipettes, just the usual sexualization of children's showbiz? "

- Philipp Bühler - floodlight

“Betty Thomas took over the directing from Tim Hill for the second screen appearance of the sweet little croissants. It didn't hurt anything. As in the previous film [..], the script repeatedly gives rise to over-the-top rodent action and weird song numbers. "

“... the croissants intone more or less current pop numbers in a very excessive way. The fact that the latter is not consistently convincing is less to blame on the chipmunks than - admittedly, culturally pessimistic - on the compositions themselves. At the same time, you will also have to understand the cinema-goers who at some point, annoyed by the concentrated madness in the high-frequency range, long for a little more people on the screen and, above all, the soundtrack.
