action

13 years after leaving school, friends Jim Levenstein, Kevin Myers, Chris “Oz” Ostreicher and Paul Finch return to their hometown for a class reunion . There they also meet Steve "Stifmeister" Stifler. Jim and his wife Michelle have a two-year-old child and have increasingly had marital problems since the child was born. Kevin is also married and works as an architect. Oz is a sports television presenter and lives in Los Angeles with his model girlfriend Mia. Finch's whereabouts are unknown. Stifler works as a temporary employee at an investment company and has problems with his manager.

When Jim and Michelle arrive at Jim's father Noah, Jim meets neighbor Kara, for whom he used to be the babysitter and who wants to celebrate her 18th birthday the next day. While Jim, Oz and Kevin are meeting in front of a bar, Finch suddenly turns up on a fast motorcycle who pretends to his friends that they have lived an adventurous life in various states in South America in recent years. Stifler happened to be the last to join the group, although he was not invited. It turns out that bartender Selena is a former classmate of the boys and also knows Michelle from camp.

After Jim woke up naked in his kitchen, the group visits the beach the next day, where Oz meets his first love, Heather, and her new boyfriend, a doctor named Ron. Kevin meets his school friend Vicky again. There is an argument with Kara's friend AJ and his gang. Stifler takes revenge on the group by using their cool box for the beer as a toilet and pulling their jet skis out of the water with his pickup and destroying them.

The same evening the boys happened to be attending Kara's birthday party. Jim drives the drunk Kara home. She tries to convince him to have sex in the car. Still a virgin, Kara wants to lose her innocence with her former babysitter, Jim, whom she always looked up to. Jim stays true to Michelle and tries to fight off Kara. This leads to a traffic accident in which Kara passes out. Oz, Finch, and Stifler help Jim bring Kara to her parents' house. However, they are watched by AJ as they sneak out of their room outside.

The next morning, Kevin wakes up next to Vicky after a blackout, assuming they had sex but can't remember it.

Stifler organizes a party for the next day, but with the older guests it turns into a boring standing party . Jim and Michelle want to spice up their sleepy sex life during the party. They also bring Jim's father, who has been slightly depressed since Jim's mother's death, to the party. He gets drunk with Stifler and gets to know Stifler's mother Janine. Meanwhile, Kevin confronts Vicky with his premonitions about the night before, which she firmly denies. Mia takes ecstasy at the party, and Ron makes fun of him with an older tap of Oz's participation in a TV dance show. When Heather tries to comfort Oz, they talk about their past relationship and a kiss ensues. Heather leaves the room briefly and Mia shows up, forcing Oz to have sex. When Heather reappears, there is a tussle between her and Mia. While preparing for an RPG with Michelle at the party, Jim is surprised by Kara, who wants to sleep with him again. They are discovered by the angry AJ, which ends in a fight in front of all the party guests. When the police arrive, however, the police are not particularly interested in the argument, but instead arrest Finch for stealing the motorcycle.

Mia leaves Oz. Michelle, who feels betrayed by Jim, moves in with her grandmother. Stifler is annoyed by all of this and decides to work on the day of the class reunion to save his job. At the class reunion, Finch confesses that the stories he told of the adventurous life in South America were a lie and that he stole the motorcycle from his boss after a promised raise did not materialize. Finch works as an assistant store manager at a Staples store .

Stifler can no longer be used by his boss either and quits his job in the presence of his friends. Instead, a gay couple friend from his former lacrosse team encourages him to become a party planner and to organize their wedding first. Kevin and Vicky make up again. Finch gets together with Selena. Oz and Heather and Jim and Michelle also find each other again. At the party, Stifler also meets Finch's mother Rachel and can finally “take revenge” on Finch after he slept with his mother several times.

The next morning Jim can also apologize to Kara. Oz has put his job on hold for a while and is staying with Heather. Finch wants to travel to Europe with Selena. Finally, the friends decide to meet again in a year.

production

Development and casting

After several years of announcement of a sequel, pre-production of the film began in April 2010 . Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg were hired to write and direct the film. For this part, the entire original cast should be reunited. The slogan "Save the best piece for last" suggests that this film could be the last in the American Pie series.

In March 2011, the signing of Jason Biggs, Seann William Scott and Eugene Levy for the film was announced. Biggs and Scott served as executive producers and helped persuade the remaining original cast to return. In April 2011, Alyson Hannigan, Chris Klein and Mena Suvari signed for their roles. The following month, Thomas Ian Nicholas , Tara Reid , Eddie Kaye Thomas , Shannon Elizabeth and Jennifer Coolidge signed up. In June and July 2011, the last original cast members were John Cho and Natasha Lyonne.

Filming

With a budget of $ 50 million, the film ran from early June to August 2011 in Atlanta , Georgia . In late June, the film was filmed in Conyers, Monroe and Woodruff Park. The main part was then filmed at Newton High School in Covington from July 11th to July 15th.

In the last week of July the film was filmed in Cumming on Lake Lanier in Mary Alice Park.

Reviews

According to the film review website Rotten Tomatoes, the film received rather mixed reception from critics. In 170 reviews with an average of 5.2 out of 10 points, the film received a value of 43 percent (97 negative reviews compared to 73 positive). At Metacritic it received a value of 49 percent based on 34 reviews.

The reviews from German media were also average to negative:

"Tired clothes as a continuation of the first three 'American Pie' films, which does not rebel against social prudery with abandoned sex gags, but only nostalgically warms up the successful concept."

"'American Pie: The Class Reunion' - a humorous, but ultimately despondent revival of a successful series whose gags are as set as its actors!"

“But no matter how you turn it, there is actually no 13th anniversary. It is one of the best jokes in the comedy sequel 'American Pie: The Class Reunion' when the two directors Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg ('Harold & Kumar 2') save themselves contortions and the 'American Pie' high school Just let clique get together for the 'anniversary' 13 years after their graduation - round number or not. This is justified nonchalantly with a half-sentence. However, 'American Pie: Das Klassentreffen' offers too little of this immediate, seemingly spontaneous comedy over the entire season. Hurwitz and Schlossberg try to revive the cheeky and frivolous joke of the three original films, but some of the actors lack the freshness to present it as carefree as they once were. "

- Carsten Baumgardt

Some critics rated the numerous reminiscences of the first parts and the associated “nostalgia bonus” positively. On the other hand, the film is therefore mainly recommended for fans of the first parts:

“American Pie 4 - The class reunion offers a good portion of gags, scores with the nostalgia bonus and even with one or two moving moments that are only occasionally disfigured by Strecker scenes. And at the latest when Stifler's mom (Jennifer Coolidge) hooks up with Jim's dad (Eugene Levy), we know we're right in the middle again! "

There are also critics who describe the film as an absolutely successful class reunion:

“But let's not forget what happened back then, in that extraordinary summer of 1999, and let's make a desperate attempt to reconnect with this light-heartedness and coolness. And so we have a film full of gags that cause diaphragmatic pain and tears of laughter, which fully catches the 'spirit of 99' and lets it come to life. Everyone who was there at the time will be blown away and even those who only get on now will laugh themselves out loud! "
