Location of the municipality

Wiesendangen is a municipality in the Winterthur district in the canton of Zurich in Switzerland . Wiesendangen merged with Bertschikon on January 1, 2014 .

Surname

The name Wiesendangen comes from the Germanic Wisuntwangas (the willow of the bison). However, the coat of arms does not show a bison horn, but an ibex horn.

The coat of arms is traced back to the Lords of Wiesendangen, who already used an ibex horn as a motif for their seal. In the 19th century a chamois head was used as a coat of arms. In mid-1928 the local council decided to use the older motif again as the official coat of arms.

geography

Wiesendangen is located northeast of the city of Winterthur . In the municipality there are flat agricultural areas, where there used to be a reed (swamp), and smaller, wooded hills, on the southern slopes of which viticulture is practiced. The village center is traversed by the Wiesenbach , as the Riedbach is called on its upper course, and drains around half of the municipal area.

The municipal area also includes the Aussenwachten Attikon, Buch, Menzengrüt, Bertschikon , Oberbertschikon, Gundetswil , Meisberg, Liebensberg, Gündlikon , Zünikon , Stegen, Bewangen, Sammelsgrüt and Kefikon .

The place was first mentioned in a document in 804. It was about the donation of the Wiesendang property of the former Thurgau Count Isanbard, son of Count Warin, on February 29, 804 to the Gallus Monastery . At that time, Wiesendangen, like Winterthur, still belonged to the Thurgau and not yet to the Zürichgau, which was created by separating from the Thurgau. Wiesendangen is mentioned again when Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa issued a diploma to Bishop Hermann von Konstanz on November 27, 1155 . This lists the manorial possessions of the diocese, including the courtyard and church of Winterthur and Wiesendangen. A pastor was first mentioned in 1217, the people priest Gerung. The village community with its own organs and village citizenship became stronger in the 14th and 15th centuries. The von Hegi lords of the castle had been the owners of the Wiesendangen bailiwick since at least 1465 . The first evangelical preacher from Wiesendangen was called Ulrich Peter. He came from Elgg . For 1748 the pastor counted 646 people in the Kirchhöri Wiesendangen, of which 31 were in foreign military services and 37 worked abroad. In 1914 there was a major church renovation.

In the 20th century, Wiesendangen developed from a farming village to a residential community in the agglomeration of Winterthur.

Wiesendangen station is on the Thurtallinie and is served by the S 24 Thayngen - Schaffhausen / Weinfelden - Winterthur - Zurich Airport - Zurich HB - Thalwil - Horgen Oberdorf - Zug and the S 30 Winterthur - Frauenfeld - Weinfelden on the Zurich S-Bahn .

Churches

There are two churches in the municipality of Wiesendangen:

• The Evangelical Reformed Church is located at Kirchstrasse 6 in the center of the village and has late medieval frescoes of national importance.
• The Roman Catholic Church of St. Stefan is located at Wannenstrasse 4. It was built between 1980 and 1981 and is called like the parish belonging to it.

Others

The well-preserved village center along the Wiesenbach is dominated by houses that were partly built in the 17th century, the reformed church, which was first mentioned in 1155, and the castle tower built in the 12th century . The village square with its many fountains was redesigned in 2004.

Wiesendangen has a wide range of options for young people. There are two meeting places for young people, a football club with various youth teams, a gymnastics club with a youth team for girls and boys, a Cevi youth department, an approx. 800 square meter skate and BMX area, which is maintained by a local club (OnWheels) and is expanded. Also famous is the annual Wiesendanger masked ball , which is organized by the local fire brigade .
